Here's a tip for small business owners (or aspiring ones).

🚩 Last month, I received a faulty product from a brand that’s been trending on social media. When I gave them feedback, they were UNAPOLOGETIC and proceeded to be defensive. 😅

Mas nauna pa nilang inassume na ako yung may fault. They invalidated my experience. First time kong bumili sa kanila nun. I felt so bad that I swore I will NEVER buy nor support that brand ever again.

🚩 In the same month, I also experienced a faulty service from one of the online services I’ve been using. They’re a startup and so their digital product isn't perfect.

BUT everytime I gave them feedback, they would always be RECEPTIVE and use that data to improve. They would always thank me for the suggestions, and sometimes even offer me a free month subscription.

Pero it’s not even about the incentive eh - it’s about how they reply to me and how they listen.

And so even if they started out a bit scrappy, I’ve been LOYAL to them for more than a year now.

🚩 Incidentally, weeks after, I was on the receiving end naman of negative feedback. I got an email from a customer complaining about their experience with our service at BookSpine PH.

You see, it’s still also scrappy as we’re a startup and we’ve been doing experiments and undergoing transitions.

But the customer gave detailed feedback with the intent of helping us improve.

So the team and I apologized, took the feedback, reviewed our processes, and started implementing changes para ma-fix unti-unti ‘yung user experience. Still not perfect, but we caught gaps that could be fixed easily, so we did.

For me, super valuable ng feedback because we sometimes have blind spots na only users can point out.

📌 And so here’s what I’ve learned as a work-in-progress entrepreneur. This principle is what I’ve been taking to heart ever since I started my first online business when I was 13 years old..

When you’re just starting out:

👉 You WILL make mistakes.
👉 Your operations will NOT be perfect.
👉 You WILL get negative feedback.
👉 You WILL get complaints.
👉 Your product or service will NOT be ideal yet.

But what will set you apart?

✨ Your CUSTOMER SERVICE. ✨

👉 It's about how you handle those mistakes.

No amount of marketing can compensate for bad customer service (like the first brand I mentioned na trending). Yes, you can get a lot of new customers sa marketing. But customer service is what will get most of them to stay.

✅ You have to EMPATHIZE.
✅ You have to be receptive to feedback.
✅ You have to learn to apologize to customers. (Yes, even though it might not be entirely your fault, you have to think which parts of your processes can be improved to avoid that problem in the future. Take accountability of the things you can control.)

✨ The way you handle complaints determines the amount of loyal customers you will have.

This is also what will allow you to improve - use that data from actual users to build your product or service to its “ideal” version. 💯

👉 Don’t take customer service for granted.

When you start a business, a lot of things can go wrong. Not everyone will have a good experience all the time. But it’s the quality of your customer service that will set you apart and help you survive for a long time. ✨
