Improv Masala
Improv Masala is a multi-cultural, improvised comedy show inspired by Bollywood, set in Aotearoa! It's a blend of Bollywood, improvisation and Aucklanders.
Improv Masala is a brand new show to be staged at the Covert Theatre! Our multi-cultural players dish up this melting pot of genres, inspired by the Bollywood masala movie. Yes, there will be dancing.
Rehearsal today was so fun today, that we didn't even take photos! But here's what it kinda looked like. Almost exactly like this. yep.

Excited and proud to be interviewed by the Asia Media Center about identity, representation and improv with the incredible Yoong Ru Heng
This awesome cast have given so much for this show! Their time watching the movies, their knees learning the bollywood moves, their comfort levels stepping into a brand new genre! Yay!
Hum hain Improv Masala!
And we're done for the year! What a wonderful opening season. Audiences have been amazing - we've loved entertaining all of you and so happy you came to see our show!
Show #4 was a story of an Indian prince trying to be a normal guy in Auckland, his evil uncle plotting to kill him, a double, triple, quadruple secret agent sent to spy on him, nosy nosy neighbours with a crazy dysfunctional family unit, a five time divorcee with a guruji who quoted rap lyrics, a career confused mid life crisis and two matriarchs inventing Indian/Russian fusion food!
So much joy and masala. We hope to see you all again!
Show number 3!
There was the villain who wanted money and shunned love, until she was converted by family love. The heroine who fell so deeply in love as a child that it could not be denied no matter how practical her family wanted her to be! The kings of the shoe business! A perfect bra designed by men who know the female form and psyche better than anyone. The confused new arrival in NZ. The dog psychologist. The traditional father the slightly crazy grandma and Elle1, Elle2 and Elle3 who were the best minions a villain could ask for!

Show number 2: The photographer tells me that she was so busy enjoying the show she forgot to take photos! I'm going to take that as the greatest compliment!
What kind of Masala was it you ask? Well : long lost brothers, paani puri / gol gappa / puchka stands around auckland, the papatoetoe diwali jewel thief gang, contrabrand scorched almonds, bumbling police officers who can't imagine women being the head of a gang, the love triangle that shattered, blindness from too much tv, instant healing of blindness because of family love, the long lost brothers where one is a criminal, the Russian/Ukranian mother, housing crisis in Auckland and of course the always hilarious human spitoon.
