Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) is held from 14-21 September. The theme for 2024 is 'Ake ake ake – A forever language', symbolising the resilience, adaptability and endurance of our language. It also reflects the commitment of New Zealanders to embrace and learn te reo Māori long into the future.
To celebrate, we have a special display on view from from 12-21 September, highlighting the diversity of te reo Māori books within our Mātauranga Māori Collection.
Nau mai, haere mai to Level One Pacific Space, Te Herenga Mātauranga Whānui | General Library to explore pūrākau (stories), kōrero tuku iho (oral histories), and kaupapa Māori resources that celebrate and nurture our reo.
Manuhiri Huatahi was 12 when she first told her family she wanted to learn te reo Māori, even though languages like French and Spanish were more accessible. It’s one of many hurdles she’s faced – and overcome - on her te reo Māori journey, which now involves helping others learn the language as a Kaiārahi at the University of Auckland’s new ReoSpace.

Te Tumu Herenga
Te Tumu Herenga, the name gifted to us by former kuia Dr Merimeri Penfold, means "the chief tethering post".
Its poetic meaning refers to the waka, or vessels, for which it is the main binding point, the unmovable mainstay to which they are tethered. To native Māori speakers there is a very strong association between "herenga" (bond) and "waka". The word "tumu" emphasises the strength of the bond, and its chiefly status.
Waka can contain very precious things, and very mundane things as well, reflecting the wide range of information Libraries contain. Waka are inherently linked to people on their different journeys. The vessel concept in essence captures many worlds, ancient, modern, in all disciplines, and the link, Te Tumu Herenga, to those worlds is the Library.
