As an aspiring composer myself & as a son of composer Iosefa Lale Peteru of Punialava’a, it is my strong belief that requesting permission from composers is crucial as it honors their creative work, ensuring due credit and respect.

I went ahead and did just that. I touched base with Fafo & the rest is history ☺️ What an honour it is to cover this song with the blessing of the composer himself, Ulufafo Aulalo of Tiama’a 🙌🏽

As we close Samoa’s 60th independence celebrations, one song springs to mind - ‘Na tōfia e le Atua Samoa’.

In summary, when asked by the United Nations about their opinion on Samoa’s potential independence, one of the first overseas scholarship recipients, Lā’ulu Fetauimalemau Matā’afa conveyed that the fa’a Matai is a hindrance to the democracy of Samoa. While her opinion was highly unpopular, the generations that followed, soon realized that change in Samoa was inevitable.

This story then inspired Toleafoa Talitimu to create this beautiful masterpiece that captures the true essence of one of the most important (and often overlooked) events in Samoan history.
