Community Coalition Against Cuts
We are a coalition of community organisations against proposed budget cuts. Cuts have significant impacts on communities and public services.
The coalition of chaos government announced it will stop the Regional Fuel Tax (RFT) in June. Here is the response of the Mayor of Auckand City:

When Auckland Supercity was formed, our council made promises to keep our airport shares in "benefit for perpetuity" to provide free access to services such as libraries and swimming pools for the people in Manukau.
The airport is naturally not providing a return for shareholders after 2 years of travel bans due to covid, however the sale of the airport is a very permanent fix for a temporary problem.

NO CUTS for Climate Action
by Yuan Gao
Auckland, like many other cities around the world, requires funding for climate action due to the following reasons:
1. Mitigating Climate Change: Auckland, as a major urban centre, has a significant carbon footprint. Investing in climate action initiatives can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the impacts of climate change. This includes funding for renewable energy projects, energy-efficient infrastructure, public transportation improvements, and promoting sustainable practices across various sectors.
2. Adapting to Climate Change Impacts: Auckland is already experiencing the effects of climate change, including rising sea levels, more frequent and intense storms and floods, and increased temperatures. Adequate funding is needed to develop and implement strategies to adapt to these impacts. This may involve coastal protection measures, flood management systems, resilient infrastructure, and urban planning considering future climate risks.
3. Protecting Natural Resources: Auckland is known for its natural beauty, harbours, beaches, and native forests. Funding for climate action can support initiatives to protect these valuable natural resources. This may include protecting and restoring wetlands, rivers, and streams to keep floodwaters away from homes and communities and improving our green spaces through planting trees and maintaining our parks so that our urban environment is more resilient in the face of extreme weather.
4. Enhancing Community Resilience: Climate change affects communities in various ways, including social, economic, and health impacts. Funding for climate action can support programmes that enhance community resilience, such as education and awareness campaigns, community engagement initiatives, and social support systems. It can also help vulnerable populations adapt to climate change and reduce the disparities arising from its effects.
5. Meeting International Commitments: New Zealand, as a signatory to international agreements like the Paris Agreement, has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions and taking climate action. Auckland, as the largest city in the country, plays a crucial role in meeting these commitments. Adequate funding is necessary to fulfil these obligations and contribute to global efforts in combating climate change.

A rates rise of 13% would cover the entire budget deficit. That is $8.40 a week for the average Auckland household.
We are in a climate crisis with investment needed to improve infrastructure, to cut emissions and maintain wellbeing.
We can fix Auckland through fair rates.
We don't need to sell our national assets.
We don't need to cut community services.

No Cuts for Public Transport - written by Yuan Gao
Public transport is an essential public service that everyone in Tāmaki Makaurau should have access to. However, the infrastructure of Auckland cannot support its population.
After working on behalf of Auckland Transport to deliver personal journey plans in West Auckland, Puhinui and Northcote for nearly a year, I have witnessed poor public transport in Tāmaki Makaurau. Auckland Transport needs to upgrade the quality of its services before charging more to the public. Out of the 3200 people our team surveyed at the doorstep, the project team's most frequent response was that Auckland Transport needs to ensure bus routes are fully staffed so people can commute daily without the fear of frequent bus cancellations. Due to urban sprawls in Auckland, everyone may experience city-wide congestion during peak hour traffic. The shortage of bus drivers in Auckland before COVID-19 has deteriorated. Lack of leadership and administration in Auckland Transport has been an ongoing issue for a long time, and Auckland Transport has not improved the quality of working conditions for bus drivers. Therefore, communities and Auckland Transport need funding from Auckland Council.
Under Mayor Wayne Brown's proposed Annual Budget 2023/2024, there will be permanent cancellations of more than 1000 buses a day across all regions of Tāmaki Maukaurau. It is not what people living in Auckland expect Wayne Brown's "Fix Auckland" to be. Wayne Brown has been unaware of the scale of the issue in the public transport system for years in Auckland.
Thanks Chlöe Swarbrick for your support!
Please sign our petition and share it with your friends and whānau. All Aucklanders will be impacted by these cuts. The council has been presented with several alternative budgets by community leaders, and our Mayor needs to take it seriously!
Wayne Brown, you say "Taxing the rich is not an option", and we'd like to know;
Considering the wealthiest Aucklanders are making more money than ever, WHY NOT?

All I want to say is that they don’t really care about us. - Wayne Brown has suggested “he cares about the community - yet says we should cut down on our spending rather than using his brain and resources to realise the solution has to come from taxing the rich.
“Instead of thinking there may be less money to shell out, they should look at their own spending. The economic and social development and support for New Zealand’s largest and most diverse region cannot be the sole responsibility of Auckland Council.
