Dr Andrea Shepperson
Showcasing new developments in aesthetic and wellness based dentistry in Auckland, NZ
What a great weekend discussing digital strategies and clinical applications. We had tremendous support from and , APAC Marketing Manager for 3Shape who arrived with 10 scanners and laptops to share amongst participants.
We looked at quality control features of digital - how to prep using guided prep techniques and utilise clearance and patient monitoring to evaluate our preps.
We looked at the science of scanning - full arch versus partial arch and the impact of stitching and mesh holes.
The role of AI Generative design which is trending in dentistry, cloud based platforms and the networked digital office.
What a great 2 days and an honour to host delightful colleagues from Australia and New Zealand. It is always a privilege to teach and share ideas. Thank you to all participants, and for your generous support.
‼️WEBINAR TONIGHT. We talk with the pioneer of digital dentistry and dental futurist, about digital design and lab communication. As dentistry moves to Generative AI design and 50% of dentists in many countries are using scanners, how do we shift our thinking to realise the power of digital.
What is a true digital dentist? And how can we work effectively with a digital lab, harnessing all the tools of design, visualisation, predictability and treatment planning. A great discussion for labs, dentists, team members and industry.

Dentistry has moved from the analogue world of tactile dentistry to a virtual world generated by mouse and machine, algorithm and AI and viewed on a screen. It sounds easy and navigating this virtual world takes skill and understanding to bridge the gap, and great communication between dentist and lab.
Our next webinar features digital master of both analogue and digital design .
We discuss some of the challenges and advantages of dentistry in the digital age from a design and lab perspective.
Christian brings his expertise as world class ceramist to address the common issue faced by labs and dentists in embracing the digital realm. Webinar links in bio or at andreashepperson.com

The last few months have been fun and travel filled - 10 cities, 3 continents and 7 countries. Now it’s time to stay grounded 😉, enjoy winter in NZ and head to local events, celebrating first class speakers at home.
✅ Dr Sheng Zhang is one of the best presenters I have heard in Implantology. He’s hosting a 2 day course on Removable Implant Prostheses. Not everyone needs All On X, and I’m looking forward to refining my skills to provide better and versatile patient solutions.
✅ The NZDA Conference is always a highlight. So many great speakers and I’m particularly looking forward to seeing and .fitzharris.54 present. Nick’s book is brilliant and he is one of the most experienced guided surgery clinicians I know.
✅ have invited to their Symposium. If you want to see world class dentistry from a humble presenter, you should not miss this!! Current AACD President, Adamo Notarantonio is truly extraordinary. I’ve signed up for the hands-on workshop too. What an opportunity for NZ dentists to learn from him.
So that’s my CPD list for the coming months. What’s on yours?
While I enjoy doing All On X, and get great results working with the DSD Planning Center for the terminal dentition, there are many times when we combine implant dentistry with a patient who wants to keep their natural dentition. In some cases, particularly access for cleaning around implants, a removable solution is a better option.
I’ll be attending this meeting next weekend with Sheng Zhang from Dental Artistry.
I first heard Sheng speak at a meeting in Matamata. He gave a brilliant, practical, evidence-based presentation on why implant screws loosen. It was one of the best lectures I have heard. So I’m off to the Dental Artistry Academy in Newmarket to learn about the Removable Implant Prosthesis, which will be in greater demand amongst an aging population.
Here’s the course link for anyone interested, and I look forward to seeing you there: https://academy.dentalartistry.co.nz
Today was a special day at the office catching up with our lovely patient Diane. We met 33 years ago when Diane placed her trust in me to be her dentist. I had started my first practice, a greenfield startup 5 years after graduation. It was a challenging business environment, post 1987 share market crash, NZ in recession and through commitment, many hours devoted to providing clinical excellence and satisfying experiences, and the support of the community and people like Diane, I had a busy practice within 6 months. It was humbling to experience the trust placed in me as a young dentist forging a career.
I did 2 more startups, ending in our final location which has been home for 23 years. We had a laugh today about ‘the originals’ - those patients who were there from the beginning and have followed me around. We also talked about the durability of the partnership between great dentistry and a dedicated patient, noting that much of our work dated back 33 years. So thank you Diane and many other originals 😊. While I know going to the dentist might not be your favourite thing, we enjoy the friendship, human interactions, family stories and life’s milestones and that’s what provides the greatest joy in my working day. 🙏🏻
I’m loving at the moment, for its 3D segmentation of a CBCT, among other things. The reporting is a fast highlight of pathology - picked up bone loss around implants the other day that was highlighted in the report, requested a segmentation to visualise in 3D and within a minute had a picture of the situation.
Look at the pulpal anatomy in the segmentation. How valuable is that visualisation if you want to see where the pulps are - especially teeth with bifurcating pulps that may not split or split and merge apically.
I’m also using it in - it allows segmentation and download of STL components individually or in one piece and these are uploaded to Modjaw to synch with the IOS STL, so I can visualise the entire mandible, maxilla and TMJ in the movements. That assumes a FOV to see the TMJ’s of course.
Congratulations to for the technology. It’s beautiful to work with 🙏🏻.

Look at the pulpal anatomy in the segmentation - I don’t do endo these days. How valuable is that visualisation if you want to see where the pulps are - especially teeth with bifurcating pulps that may not split or split and merge apically.

Congratulations to Alex Sanders for the technology. It’s beautiful to work with 🙏🏻.
It’s the little things that make a visit to memorable. We’ve been putting together the gift boxes for attendees - many surprises and a little taste of Waiheke Island, thanks to and .
Lots of handy dental things in there too. We are delighted to welcome course attendees for the first hands on in our 6 month Managing Tooth Wear programme tomorrow.
Thank you to for hands in support during the event.
It was great to meet .itay, the inventor of this week.
We met at NZ headquarters in a workshop demonstrating the technique. I first had a play with it in 2023 before release in NZ and found it easy to use clinically for the injectable composite resin technique.
Ideal for the monolithic veneer, the anatomy is very nice and if you want to get creative, it allows for cutback and re-injection for a polychromatic effect.
The matrix is ingenious and the surface very smooth - not always the case with 3D printed designs, depending on the print orientation and layer thickness selected. In fact, on most 3D printed models we apply a fine layer of separating medium before making the Exaclear index to get the smooth surface achieved with an analogue wax design. Of course, iVeneer bypasses this step and the need for 3D printed models and clear stents.

This was a great discussion about the future of dentistry, biomaterials, novel materials and informed consent and how much the print process affects the physical properties of materials.
Thank you to for her contribution and discussion of her research on the correlation of three wear test modules and post-analysis methods for dental materials.
I’d also like to acknowledge the Sir John Walsh Research Institute at the for their biomaterials research. In vitro studies on new materials pave the way for clinical applications. This work is so valuable to clinicians.
