Fears women can't afford to leave abusive relationships amid cost of living crisis 05/08/2024

Shine has a free helpline and provides safe houses for women escaping abuse. Its Senior Family Violence Advisor, Rachel Kain said economic hardship was more common among those requesting help.

"Our frontline are reporting that nearly every single person who's enrolled in our programmes, for people experiencing violence and people using violence, need food support."

She said Shine received 30 percent more calls for help in the first three months of this year, compared to the same period in 2023.

🔶 Questions about fundraising for Light it Orange 2024? 🔶

Light it Orange is an essential initiative supporting victims of family violence. Every $250 you raise will cover the cost of a crisis callout to a victim’s home in response to an urgent referral.

Money raised will assist in promoting our free-to-call national helpline, so that more victims, who are often isolated and feel they have no one to turn to, know that there is help available and are able to get in touch to get the help they need.

Why is this important?

Making stalking a crime will help to protect our basic human right to live safely and free of fear in Aotearoa NZ. We need to do this now to prevent more severe distress and physical harm from stalking, including murders committed by stalkers.

Too many employers still asking for “proof” of domestic violence | Shine 27/03/2024

Family violence specialist service Shine is calling on employers to stop asking for proof of domestic violence in order for employees to access domestic violence leave.

The call comes five years after the introduction of the Domestic Violence – Victims’ Protection Act 2018, which provides 10 days of paid domestic violence (DV) leave per year for affected employees.

“Unfortunately, Shine regularly hears of employers who are unaware of their obligations under the Act. Others may fulfill their legal obligations, but fail to do so in a way that provides safe and effective support for employees experiencing family violence,” says Mira Taitz, Shine’s DVFREE Lead.

10 signs that love is not love : https://ow.ly/7OPj50QAsjV

Valentine’s Day is a special day of celebration for many, but for others, it can be a chilling reminder that what looks like love can be part of a wider pattern of abusive behaviour.

“Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. Unwanted attention, constant monitoring and surveillance, isolating you from your family and friends, limiting what you can do, making you too uncomfortable or scared to disagree, insulting you, humiliating you and controlling your money are all forms of coercive control and family violence. They’re all dangerous. Family violence is not only physical violence,” says Shine DVFREE Lead and Senior Trainer, Mira Taitz.

What’s behind Kanye West dressing his wife nearly n**e? https://ow.ly/zlOC50QAsg7

West’s behaviour has been likened by many to coercive control, a form of domestic abuse which Shine DVFREE lead and senior trainer Mira Taitz describes as “a pattern of behaviours [used] to frighten, intimidate, [and] control the other person.”

“Coercive control is one of the most dangerous forms of intimate partner violence,” says Taitz.

She says there are a range of tactics used, including dictating what your partner can wear, how their house has to look, or how they have to walk.

“We can live in a social context where other people might minimise it, other people might normalise the behaviours, but also the person using the violence might be psychologically manipulating that person as well, putting them down, isolating them,” Taitz says.

Shine media statement | Shine 12/02/2024

Presbyterian Support Northern which provides the Shine family violence response service, Family Works social service and Lifeline helplines, has joined Women’s Refuge in expressing concern about Police plans for a managed withdrawal from family harm callouts. This announcement comes at a time when calls to Shine’s 24/7 helpline have doubled in recent months.

PSN CEO Dr Bonnie Robinson MNZM says people experiencing family violence call the Police because there is violence or the threat of violence and they are in danger.

“Police are the only agency that has the authority to arrest and detain someone or de-escalate the situation and so potentially, they help protect children at the address as well. Family violence is a huge issue for New Zealand and it’s important that we as a society address it effectively."

The Shine Story

Shine provides a wide range of services to stop domestic abuse and save lives. These include our national Helpline, services for victims such as our 2 women's refuges in Auckland and advocacy and crisis support working closely with police, Auckland hospitals and others, KIDshine for children exposed to domestic violence, and the No Excuses men’s stopping violence programme. We also work to help other individuals and organisations improve their response to victims and perpetrators of domestic violence, so that more people throughout New Zealand get the help they need to be safe and to stop using violence. This includes professional training programmes throughout NZ, our DVFREE workplace programme, and our Shine in School programme.

While some of our work is supported by funding from a number of Government agencies, the support we receive from donations, sponsorship and other fundraising is critical to our ability to meet demand for our services and to innovate so that we are providing the services that best meet the needs of victims of domestic violence. With your help, we can continue to help more victims of domestic violence get safe and stay safe, while also working to prevent and reduce family violence in New Zealand.

Since 2016 Shine has been a service of Presbyterian Support Northern (PSN), an organisation with the aim to help create a better life for everyone, especially those who are most vulnerable.

PSN’s social services build strong families, help anyone struggling with age, disability or injury to enjoy a better lifestyle and advocate on behalf of those experiencing domestic abuse to help them to get safe and stay safe.
