Which came first the Chicken or the Egg ?

This eternal conundrum is matched in the Audio world by which compressor comes first in the chain, The LA 2A or the 1176 ?

The combo attack of the ’76 and ‘2A has been a studio stable for decades, often wired in series with each other so that one catches the audio’s peaks and the other does the heavy compression, but which way do they go ?

There's no right or wrong answer but the folks at Black Lion Audio have made choosing a whole lot easier with their B172A Hybrid Fet Optical Compressor

The B172A includes their take on the the 1176 Fet Compressor, the Seventeen in same box as an LA2A style Opto Comp. Each can be connected individually as mono units, but here's where it get interesting.....the front panel has a selector to then link the the two, in either order....2A to 76, or 76 to 2A !

Talk about versatile !

Black Lion Audio went the extra mile on this and also designed their own TB4 OptoCell for the 2A !

RIP Steve Albini

His work as a Recording Engineer has shaped many of the albums I hold dear, and his input to Royer Labs and Josephson Engineering mics has shaped what we hear.

Steve Albini has left us. It's a sad day at Royer. 24 years ago we released a demo CD that showed what ribbon mics were capable of, and Steve Albini created a large part of it for us. His straight ahead commentary and sound samples caught the attention of thousands of people. We went through more than 150,000 copies of that CD, due in large part to Steve's involvement.
