Waitakere POWERtalk International Club
We meet at New Lynn Community Centre, 7.30pm on 1st & 3rd Wednesday of the month.
Welcome to Anja who joined Powertalk Waitakere last night.
It was a cold night so we warmed ourselves up with education and practice on impromptu speaking
Reviewing was the name of the game at last night's meeting. Janet did that with a vengeance by reviewing JD Robb's In Death series - all 59 of them.
A fun evening with an Out Of The Box impromptu speaking that our two guests Anja and Beng joined in
Lynsie presenting a book review. She was so passionate about she only wanted us to focus on the book!
Mary led a 30 minute workshop on colourful language at our meeting last night. In other words, how to paint a picture and increase our word power. Great fun and very informative.
Last night Jody was presented with her certificate for completing Bronze level Accreditation. Mary did the honours. Congratulations Jody and you're quite right, "that didn't take long".
The Power of Pause was our theme for the evening. How to use pause for good effect and also how not to - the dreaded ums. Great to see two visitors Don and Gregg
Wow, what a great meeting last night. A 20 minute session on dealing with nerves turned into a 45 minute deep and intensive session with full participation. We wish there was a magic answer for nerves but practice, practice, practice at a Power talk club certainly helps
And the winner of the Speech contest is Janet. Very entertaining.
Jody did a great job getting second in the club Speech Contest tonight.
Do you want to be entertained, educated and enthralled. Come along to Powertalk Waitakere's Speech Contest on 20th March. 7.30pm, Meeting Room 2 New Lynn Community Centre. All visitors welcome
When life gives you lemons you make lemonade. Finding ourselves without a venue due to double booking we met at President Janet's home.
The theme of the evening was evaluation and e watched two TED Talks: Amy Cuddy's Your Body Language May Shape Who You Are and .Malcolm Gladwell's Choice, Happiness and Spaghetti Sauce.
We then evaluated each speaker. Both on what they said and how they said it. An excellent evening closed with a convivial supper.
Back to our regular room at the next meeting which is our Speech Contest. Visitors welcome
Speech Preparation was on our minds last night as Janet led us through an excellent education session. Getting ready for the speech contest on 20 March
Celebrating our last meeting of 2023. A nice gift from Santa was our newest member Sunit
Laughter abounded at our meeting with the appropriate theme of Humour. Well known for her entertaining speeches Janet led us through a session on using Humour. Mary challenged us with weird phobias and collective nouns
Guessing and using obsolete words created a fun Issues of the Day session.
Boyd delivering his Personal Interest speech last night. You would never guess that the interest was rugby league!.
Mary's speech was about her three favourite words - gin and tonic.
Barbara celebrating her birthday before delivering a session on vocal variety. All vocal chords really relaxed!
Being locked out of your meeting room due to a double booking was no deterrent to Powertalk Waitakere. We simply took over the foyer. Lots of laughter as we had to reuse words no longer in use - such as "quockerwodger" ( a wooden puppet) or "groak" ( to silently watch someone eating and hoping to be invited to join them).
Education Session on Impromptu Speaking was both fun and educational and Jeff told us why he was calling in his lawyer in his speech.
Lynsie is not conducting the orchestra in this photo but leading us through impromptu speaking.
An hilarious meeting as Jeff told us we had won a free trip for Issues of the Day - our impromptu speaking practice. The only trouble was the countries were Russia, Angola, Afghanistan - you get the picture. Really helpful session on Evaluation presented by Mary. Powerful poetry reading by Patrick of Ode to a Nightingale
Photo shows Boyd and Helen evaluating the Issues speakers
Fab Glassworks in Taupo.
Attending a fantastic session on Social Media by James Nottage of Keep It Social.
Session at the Powertalk National Conference
Welcome Boyd to Waitakere Powertalk as our newest member
Has anyone noticed only advertisements and no friends posting this week?
The meeting on 15 February has been cancelled as the New Lynn Centre is being used as an evacuation ventre
Our last meeting for 2022. Presents both comic and poignant filled a Christmas themed evening. Jodi was awarded the cup for Speaker of the Evening
An ab fab meeting last night. We practiced our special occasion speeches and here is the wedding party. Tears of laughter at Helen's Mrs Bucket impersonation as Mother of the Bride and Kleo's brilliant references to the Princess Bride
Waitakere members caught the speech structure train last night during Barbara's session (crafted by Janet) Lots of fun during Issues when Patrick proposed to Helen after having to speak on the benefits of being single. That won him speaker of the evening. Waqar, in his first time as Compere, rose to the challenge of last minute changes
A stimulating and entertaining meeting last night. Jerome's speech on the perils of social media urged us to do the occasional "digital detox". Mary enthused us with a review of the TV series "Waterhole Oasis" and took us all to Africa.
Jeff took the trophy for best Issues of the Day Speaker.
An educational and interesting meeting on Wednesday. Waqar and Jeff gave speeches on Fear and We shall Overcome. Coincedental dovetailing. Helen led us through an education session on delivering a biographical speech. We have not had this before and her approach was both intriguing and inspiring.
Barbara receiving the trophy for Best Speaker
Despite a horrible night weatherwise we had a positively glowing meeting. Barbara entertained us with her speech on Anticipation.
Waqar gave an excellent session on Creative Visualisation. Jerome's topics for Issues of the Day challenged and used us
And there was cake for Helen and Barbara's birthdays.
