The first Auckland Racing Club race meeting was held as part of a two-day carnival on 25 and 26 May 1874, with the 25th being observed as a public holiday to celebrate Queen Victoria's birthday. This followed the formation of the Club some five months earlier in January that same year.

Races held over the two days included the Champagne Stakes (May 25) and the Auckland Cup (May 26), which both celebrated their 150th running this year 🏆

The sun was shining on us here at ATR in more ways than one recently...we're so proud to have received the award for Best Metropolitan Club for 2023 at the recent NZTR Industry Day ☀️🏆 We then went one better, taking out Club of the Year (with our friends from Ruakaka Racing - Whangarei RC) too 🙌

We've got a Group 1 happening oncourse this weekend with none other than the NZEA New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes. To celebrate the occasion, we've gathered some special history on the race below 📰🏇⚫

Awapuni 3YO filly, Breathalyser, created history when becoming the inaugural winner of the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes in February 1971.

The Battle Wagon filly was owned by lawyers, RA Calkin and TA De Cleene, and was named after the pair had gained a reputation as expert defense attorneys in cases involving "driving whilst under the influence".

Trained by Allan Kaye, Breathalyser prevailed in a thrilling finish with Te Awamutu jockey, John Riordan in the saddle. Breathalyser defeated Ajasco by half a length with Devante in third place.

Amongst the beaten lot in the star-studded line up were Rich Return, Topsy, Susan Jane and Artifice.

It was Breathalyser's second major victory in three weeks after she had downed another top-class field of 3YOs including Jan's Beau, Fort Hagen and Panzer Chief in the Rotorua Challenge Stakes.

Since 1971, there has been an outstanding honour roll of winners of the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes including Tudor Light, Orchidra, Waikiki, Aimee Jay, Tall Poppy, Saint Cecile and, in recent years, Avantage, Imperatriz and last year's winner, Belclare.

In recognition of the inaugural winner of the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes, Racing Te Aroha have created the 2024 winner's dress rug, garland and sash in the racing colours of Breathalyser 🏁
