This can be a result of tightness and weakness with the lats and teres muscles as well as tightness in the levator scap. 1. Foam rolling lats and teres. Tightness and weakness in these muscle can restrict overhead movements and may result in shoulder, neck and upper back pain. Foam rolling can help reduce the muscle tone in these muscles and therefore improve overhead mobility. 2. Levator scapular stretch. A common cause I see for restriction in overhead movement is levator scapular tightness.
