"There are those who say that a life devoted to food -- cooking it, eating it, writing about it, even dreaming about it -- is a frivolous life, an indulgent life. I would disagree. If we do not care what we eat, we do not care for ourselves, and if we do not care for ourselves, how can we care for others?"
Fictional cookery writer Hilary Small, in episode 6, series 2 of 'Pie In the Sky'

New Zealand a food producer of global scale 16/09/2020

Now more than ever people are looking to source top quality food from reliable sources. We must continue to promote New Zelaand food as the best in the world. We are already a strong food nation, and this can only grow.

New Zealand a food producer of global scale New Zealand’s credentials as a global food and meat producer are highlighted in an op-ed in leading U.S. trade publication The National Provisioner by Matt Luxton, Director of Sales, USA at Silver Fern Farms. New Zealand exports a variety of …

We are certainly living in interesting times. And food becomes even more critical. As a part of a healthy lifestyle. And as a source of joy and satisfaction - especially when enjoyed around the table with whanau and friends.
I also want to share these comments from ian Proudfoot, KPMG
Disruption = Opportunity
Here are some predictions of market advantages for food:
* consumers will be keen to eat in a way that 's designed to protect them from health issues
* anything 'novel' will need to deliver unique health benefits and be immunity boosting
* think about 'immersive digital food experiences'
history will record this crisis came from a food safety failing - consumers will see ultimate value in trusted, traceable and safe food
* the debate between animal and plant based food will intensify
* food has become 100% important again - being able to get it when we need it gives us a feeling of security
* There are 500,000 'food insecure' Kiwis - this means they struggle with either food availability or nutritionally.
* On the flip side there are 1.3-1.4 million Kiwis suffering from obesity and diabetes.
* As a nation we produce enough food for 40 million people.
* Globally we need to show that we can feed our 5 million Kiwis properly first - so we can show the rest of the world that we don't have significant health issues with our own food.
Stay well.

I bought this fabulous book last night at the 10th birthday celebrations for , a social enterprise I have been involved with for almost the 10 years. The founder launched her new book celebrating the children who grow, harvest, prepare and share the fruits and vegetables from their schools. This book captures the essence of the programme. It would be a fine addition to any home. You can buy yours now at www.epicurepress.co.nz.

Behind the scenes of a total sausage-fest 17/10/2019

A few weeks ago I was again judging the DEVRO National Sausage Awards. Not for the faint hearted.... more in this story here (although I swear they did put a few words in my mouth too!!). There were many fine sausages this year - some to suit all tastes and budgets. Bring on summer barbecues!
