Introducing this month's Illuminator, footy legend, Marty Banks, The Legend of Marty Banks
With an incredible rugby resume filled with multiple successes, as well as an eponymous Facebook fan page with a huge following - not to mention being first on the list of notable people from Reefton on Wikipedia; you’d probably forgive recently- retired professional rugby player Marty Banks for having a bit of an ego.
Truth is, you couldn’t meet a more humble bloke. In fact, he’s at pains to call out the original “Reefton Kid”, ex-Tall Black basketballer Phil Jones as Reefton’s finest sport’s export. Yep, this self-confessed “very fortunate country boy” has his feet firmly on the ground and his eyes firmly on his post-rugby future.
But let’s go back to Reefton - population 927 - where it all began, with goal posts in the backyard and All Black dreams. And where he got to play senior rugby with his dad, when he was fourteen. “Dad was fifty-something. I remember he got sent off in the semi-final of the local comp!”
If you want to learn more about Marty you can read the full Illuminators' Edit on our website or the real thing in the Kia Ora Magazine while you're waiting for take off this month 🛫

Introducing this month's Illuminator, Travis Ovalsen, a team leader at the Auckland 445 Run Club.
Acerbic Irish poet and playwright Oscar Wilde once said that only dull people are brilliant at breakfast. Clearly he never met Travis Ovalsen who, by the time the first meal of the day rolls around, has already packed in a novel full of good stories.
An electrician by day, Travis’s real passion is sparking things up as team leader of the Auckland chapter of the 445 Run Club. Like the name suggests it’s a run club that meets at 4.45. AM. Not PM. Every Friday. Rain, hail or shine. No excuses.
Those short sentences are not an accident. We’re breathless even thinking about waking up at that hour, let alone to go and run. But for Travis, it’s so much more than an early jog around the block.
If you want to learn more about Travis and his story, you can read the full Illuminators' Edit on our website or the real thing in the Air New Zealand Kia Ora Magazine while you're waiting for take-off 🛫

Introducing this month's Illuminator, Dave Pearce, a beer side hustler from BadassBeverages
Seems like everyone these days has got a side hustle going on. True story, according to Statistics NZ. Last year they reckon there were over 200,000 potential dreamers, schemers, movers, shakers, and risk takers with more than one job.
Including Dave Pearce. Senior exec at a large telco by day, and beer side hustler “pretty much every other hour of my life.”
Dave, a former beer industry marketer - “Beer is in my blood” - is a co-founder, along with three others, including, rather helpfully, a German brewer, of Badass Beverages - “A little project turning big ideas into rad drinks that put a smile on your dial and a high five on your taste buds,” he says.

Introducing this month's Illuminator, Taran Machra, founder of SwoleFoods
Without exaggeration, meeting Taran Machra (“Call me Taz bro”) for the first time, is a life-changing experience. And eating his health and wellness-based meals, for many, is exactly that too. His infectious positivity and mile- wide smile grabs you the moment you meet.
Taz is the founder of Swolefoods, delivering wholesome, nutritious meals to kiwis focused on their health and wellness. He’s always been into fitness himself, representing his birth country India in squash, and becoming a personal trainer after the family moved here.
In 2013 however, his life changed forever with both his parents passing away within three months of each other. A few years later, double spinal surgery in Germany on a degenerative disc disease left him at rock bottom - both physically and mentally.
Something had to give. He remembered his parents unconditional love and selfless willingness to help others. Then and there, Taz decided to honour these traits.
If you want to learn more about Taran and SwoleFoods you can read the full Illuminators' Edit on our website or the real thing in the Kia Ora Magazine while you're waiting for take-off 🛫

Introducing this month's Illuminator, Brett Band, founder of Paceracer Bespoke Watches
In an age when most of us simply swipe our phones to get the time, what role does a watch, let alone a bespoke one often costing a few thousand dollars, play?
For Brett Band, founder of Paceracer, NZ’s only bespoke watchmaking company, his watches do so much more than just tell the time. “Paceracer watches are not only functional, but when made specially for someone, they become part of their life. Something they are forever connected to” he says.
An industrial designer by trade, having worked on everything from taps to electric motorbikes, Brett woke up one day and decided that he wanted to make time to do more of what he loved. This, interestingly, included tinkering with classic mechanical watch mechanisms. “I realised I still had a love for design but my real obsession was in the precision and craftsmanship of manufacturing” he says.
