A huge mihi to the designers of Nohonga 2024, the three benches that are occupying Takutai Square for the next month. Nohonga is a design competition we run with the Auckland branch of the NZ Institute of Landscape Architects Tuia Pito Ora — this year, eleven teams of landscape architects submitted entries, and three were awarded funding to realise their designs.
Each of the entrants was asked to respond to the theme of Haumanu, which means renewal or restoration. As you can see, the resulting designs are remarkably diverse — but one of the things they have in common is that they’ve been very popular places to sit ever since they arrived.
Our thanks to the designers for their energy and creativity, as well as to competition supporters Resene and JFC. We love the way the Nohonga have added a new layer of invitation in Takutai Square for people to take a minute, to pause and sit and enjoy the sun, space and sense of connection.

If you only read the media and don’t visit downtown Auckland, you might be forgiven for thinking the area is some kind of war zone. But the lens through which the media has been viewing the central city is a distorted one, as anyone who lives or works here knows.
To add some nuance to the crime-and-destruction narrative, we decided it’d be helpful to speak to the people who know the city best: its residents. Our new interview series, This is our place, features seventeen central city residents discussing the state of their neighbourhood and its future.
To read all about it, the publication is available for free in the Atrium on Takutai or if you prefer to read online, you can visit the link in our bio.
Our thanks to all the residents for being so generous with their time and their insights, and to photographers and
