Patricia Pillay is a Zooarchaeologist and Doctoral Candidate at the University of Auckland who specialises in human-animal interactions. Her recent research considers the diet and oral health of the Māori dog from Te Ika-a Māui/North Island archaeological sites here in Aotearoa, New Zealand.

Dogs are the oldest domesticated animal and hold an eclectic range of roles in societies around the world. The Pacific Islands provide an ideal setting for understanding this ongoing evolutionary relationship between dogs and Indigenous peoples, due the absence of other domesticated animals and dispersal via oceanic transportation. Her research alongside co-authors and supervisors Professors Melinda Allen and Judith Littleton focuses on kurī or the Māori dog in Aotearoa brought from Central East Polynesia. Please join us to learn about what kurī teeth can tell us about their life in the ancient world and interactions with the ancestors of Māori and interesting comparisons to other Polynesian Dogs in East Polynesia.

This will be another Livestream event, so grab a cup of coffee, or join us while you're having your dinner, and we'll see you there!
