Eight years ago we produced one of the first exterior CLT panels in the world, using our Vulcan thermally modified timber. Placed at the front of Abodo Māngere Headquarters, Warehouse and Showroom, it is visible for all who pass by.

After all that time, the timber remains dead straight and beautifully weathered - exactly what you would expect from an Abodo Vulcan product 💪

Vantage Point House melds itself to a steep hillside with a sturdy concrete base and a cantilevered upper level, overlooking Scarborough Beach. When it came to materials, +MAP Architects specified Vulcan timbers for their hardiness in response to changes in temperature and moisture levels – important attributes for such an exposed site.

Vulcan Cladding finished in Protector – Ebony gives a clean, modern look to the home, which is contrasted beautifully with the Sioo:x coated soffits and louvres, for which Vulcan Screening battens and Vulcan Panelling are used.

PROTECTING BEAUTY / Using Vulcan shiplap cladding in a Graphite tone alongside elements of natural stone, this Utah home reflects its mountainous location, blending beautifully with the rocky alpine peaks. Copper gutters add an element of shine to this natural palette of materials.

Abodo’s distributor partners reSAWN TIMBER co. worked closely with Lloyd Architects to specify the right timber finish and coating (stain) colour on the Three Falls project.

A stain in the form of a penetrating coating has the benefit that it does not flake or crack, and tends to look more natural over time.

Abodo’s water borne Protector coating is a an example of a high performance penetrating stain and is has been designed to work specifically with our uniquely made feature timber, so that its beauty lasts.

Near Lake Tahoe, Tahoe Pines is a modern, minimalist design, tucked into a forested area with large windows to take in the leafy views.

The choice to use Vulcan Cladding in Protector - Walnut creates a nod towards the cabin style of other homes in the area, while also allowing for a clean, rich colourway across the home’s exterior.

Located in a zone that is prone to wildfires also led into the specification of Vulcan Cladding, which offers protection from fires as a certified Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) Product by the California Building Commission.

JOINERY / Vulcan Joinery - Vertical Grain has been used on the inside of this captivating Alu-wood picture window.

An Alu-wood window framing combination may be the answer to the changeable southern hemisphere climate, as highlighted in a report by scientist Gill Menzies of Heriot Watt University.

Offering a best-of-both-worlds solution, Alu-wood windows place sleek, hardy aluminium framing to the exterior face of the building, while inside the warmth of timber framing and sills can be enjoyed. This allows for the window frame to be protected from the outdoor environment while still maintaining the natural aesthetic and insulating benefits of timber framing.

As Gill Menzies' report points out, this option provides excellent longevity.

MPavilion 5 designed by Barcelona-based architect Carme Pinós, attracted attention from across the world when it was originally on view at Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne back in October 2018.

Lightweight Vulcan Screening was used extensively for the structure, blending at deceptively clever angles to make the legs and roof of the origami-inspired design.

This pavilion has now been relocated to Monash University - Peninsula Campus. With Vulcan timber possessing the dimensional stability to cope with notoriously hot Victorian summers the structure can be enjoyed for years to come.

Plantation forests make great mountain bike parks. These trail networks can bring extensive contributions to regional economies and health benefits.

We look into two recent studies that show the nationwide earnings from mountain biking activities and well-being benefits plus enjoyment of plantation forest trails over non-plantation ones.

By following the lead of one of our key suppliers, Pan Pac Forest Products who partner with the Hawkes Bay Mountain Bike Club to create and maintain trails within the Tangoio Forest, plantation forestry operators can significantly boost the growth of local economies - while at the same time provide great ways for humans to stay healthy and protect native forests in the process.

For a facility that promotes self-sufficiency for the state of Western Australian, the low environmental impact of products and materials was an important consideration for the build of the Food Innovation Precinct. As a result, the carbon negative status of Vulcan was key to its specification.

Vulcan soffits and fins, are used to create a textural, linear look, with a faceted entrance way and peaked shapes that allude to the gabled forms of barns. The building’s playful forms create moments where students, researchers and producers can break out and interact both indoors and on sheltered decks. These also serve as connection points, extending into the spaces between neighbouring buildings.

For this growing area of Western Australia, this building serves an important role in ensuring the longevity of its economy and the wellbeing of its residents, and its design both reflects and delivers this by putting the future in sharp focus.

Vulcan timber is ideal to clad garage doors for a seamless aesthetic.

Fast becoming an ideal choice for garage doors, Vulcan Cladding has a weight of less than 11kg/sqm for 20mm thick material. The stability of Vulcan timber allows thinner thicknesses to reduce the weight per square metre even more.

FOREST WATER QUALITY / Pan Pac Forest Products, an important source of Abodo’s Radiata Pine, regularly monitor streams that flow through their forestry sites.

By collecting samples from catchments, they are able to check eDNA sequencing in the water, which reveals the biodiversity of the stream.

The Pākuratahi Land Use Study involves the analysis of water samples, hydrology, stream morphology and stream ecology in neighbouring catchments with different land uses over a 12-year period.

Part One of this study, published in 2006, showed that the pine forest catchment had the lowest overall yield of sediment even when the sediment discharge during harvest was taken into account.

Part Two of the study began last year and uses new techniques like eDNA sampling, which has already revealed at-risk adult whitebait kōaro living in the pine forest catchment.

RENO WITH TIMBER / Environmental sustainability has become a focus for many homeowners and architects. With this in mind when undertaking a renovation, timber is an ideal material choice to use since it is renewable, reusable, and has a low carbon footprint.

Our Vulcan timber has gone further to become verified carbon negative, which means it stores more carbon than is emitted during manufacturing and transportation.

Specifying or buying timbers derived from Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) certified forests is the best way to ensure your weatherboards or cabinetry have a minimal impact on the environment. With Abodo timber being sourced from New Zealand FSC® certified forests, which are both fast growing and renewable, you can have confidence in making an eco choice with us 🌿

Looking for inspiration on a modern family home renovation? Westmere House was a 1940s brick bungalow with a 2009 addition of a garage with bedroom above, giving the appearance of being tacked on.

Jon Smith and the team at Matter Architects responded to the homeowner's desire for a cohesive and modern look with more space and better connections with the pool and garden, by looking upwards rather than out.

Completed in mid 2021, the renovated and extended home now fronts the street at three levels with the exterior clad in Vulcan Cladding in a deep black (Nero finish), creating a contemporary aesthetic that is strikingly juxtaposed against its more traditionally styled neighbours. Vulcan Screening adds to the clean lines of the home while also ensuring privacy.

Jon says “This home is about family and playful spaces, wrapped in a simple form, made up of beautiful small details – including Abodo’s innovative, sustainable timber which clads the home”.

MANAGING FORESTS FOR ALL / An important timber source for Abodo is from Pan Pac Forest Products where they actively manage their forests for the benefit of people and the planet.

Pan Pac teams use a surveying app to monitor performance at their sites. This enables them to monitor the preservation of indigenous forest areas and archaeological sites, to check on water control infrastructure, and to track native bird sightings.

It is also a way to obtain and share data on the forestry operations, to ensure the people working for Pan Pac are well looked after and work is carried out efficiently.

Due to the timber’s lightweight nature in comparison with hardwood products, Vulcan Screening proved an apt choice for the tall length wave profile battens, used by architects Lovell Burton to provide privacy and solar heat gain regulation at House on the Bay.

These wave profile timber battens also add texture and tactility to the home’s concrete walls reflecting shelter, enclosure and protection. Finished in the warm tones of Protector - Straw the timber complements the interior palette which brings in the colours of the sand and dune grasses that grow beside the Brighton Beach track.

RANGE UPDATE / In New Zealand, our Vulcan Cladding range now includes two options;
1. the original Architectural Series (now in its tenth year) and,
2. the new Standard Series.

What’s the difference between the two? The main difference lies in the grade of timber used.

The Architectural Series is our premium cladding product, crafted from Clear 1 grade feed stock timber to deliver a clean, high-end aesthetic.

The Standard Series is made from Clear 2 grade feed stock timber and brings a light natural character to the timber’s appearance – ideal for mid-range builds where premium clear lengths are not always required.

The Standard Series is also available in a limited range of colours and profiles. As a result, the Standard Series is available at a lower, more accessible price.

RENO WITH TIMBER / While trends in interior design and architecture can be short lived, timber has a timeless look that can be easily integrated with changing styles.

Pale timbers tones can be used to brighten a space, while darker, richer wood can give a more moody and traditional look.

Many designers have seen the benefit of adding timber to ceilings, bringing the warmth of wood overhead as seen here at the Compact City Bungalow project.

Sanctum House uses a mix of esoteric handmade bricks and richly toned Vulcan timber cladding in Ebony. For continuity indoors, this combination of materials and colours then flows through to interior linings, being particularly effective in the double volume kitchen and living space.

The dark timber upper level and base of gritty, creamy grey bricks is joined by the rich golden hues of the timber kitchen cabinetry, warming the space with complementary texture and colour. This addition to the minimal palette continues throughout the interiors in the form of furnishings and linings, bringing out the deepness of the Ebony tone in the Vulcan-lined walls.

From the mezzanine hallway upstairs, Vulcan timber in Ebony is used for sleek, hidden doors accessing the private gym as well as gifting a moody, masculine look for other interior walls.

Carefully Crafted Timber

At Abodo we craft timbers with lasting beauty that are safe for people and the environment. Our range includes cladding, decking and exterior construction timbers.

For too long, the timbers used in the places we live and work have been harvested unsustainably and chemically treated. Here at Abodo, we are leading the way for change. Our vision is for all timbers to be safe, sustainable and cared for, like the forests they grow in.

Lifetime Beauty: Abodo timbers are crafted to be enjoyed for years to come. Designed to age with grace, our timbers have exceptional weatherability and maintain their durability and beauty for a lifetime.

With Tomorrow in Mind: our timbers are harvested from sustainable plantation forests. They are crafted with respect from beginning to end – allowing us to meet today’s needs without disadvantaging future generations.
