❗️REMINDER - Sunday 12PM we are testing the tsunami sirens at Ōrewa Beach.
Kia Ora Aucklanders
A reminder that our tsunami siren testing will take place tomorrow 29th September at midday. Don't be concerned if you're in the area and you hear the test.
Located at Orewa Beach, the tsunami sirens give a combination of alert sounds and voice instructions about what actions to take in a real emergency. A test alert of the tsunami sirens will say - This is a test.
You can read about tsunami sirens and alerts and listen to an example of the test: https://www.aucklandemergencymanagement.org.nz/tsunami-warning-and-sirens
Siren testing is a good prompt to remind all Aucklanders that the whole coastline is at risk of tsunami. In the event of a tsunami threat, an Emergency Mobile Alert will be broadcast to all capable mobile phones. News and social media channels will be used to alert Aucklanders as well.
Do you know the natural warnings of a tsunami?
If you are near the shore and experience any of the following, act. Do not wait for official warnings.
🧐Feel a strong earthquake that makes it hard to stand or a long earthquake that lasts more than a minute.
👀See a sudden rise or fall in sea level.
🏝 Hear loud or unusual noises from the sea.
Remember! If an earthquake is LONG or STRONG, GET GONE and move to higher ground.

A large part of the country continues to recover from the devastating severe weather events of 2023. People lost their lives and homes and it’s a year we’ll never forget.
Reviews to look at our emergency response were completed in 2023, and we were given recommendations about how to be better prepared to support Aucklander’s in the next emergency. Auckland Council accepted the recommendations, and we immediately got to work implementing them through different work programmes.
This week, the most recent review by the Auditor-General that looked at how we have progressed implementing the recommendations, was tabled to Parliament. According to the report: 'Improving Auckland Council’s emergency preparedness: A follow-up report', Auckland Council has made large steps towards enhancing our emergency preparedness capabilities since early 2023. The report can be accessed here: https://oag.parliament.nz/2024/auckland-council
Councillor Sharon Stewart, Auckland Council’s Civil Defence and Emergency Management chairperson says, “the uptake on the OAG report recommendations shows the council is committed to being better prepared for future emergencies”.
“We know we have to keep up the momentum and we’re not stopping; we still have work to do”, says John Cranfield, Acting General Manager Auckland Emergency Management.
We’ll be sharing more details and the progress we’re making with our work programmes over the next few months.
Emergency preparedness isn’t just about one action or one group of people, as a community we’re only ever as prepared as our neighbours; if you haven’t done so already, please make your plan today: https://www.aucklandemergencymanagement.org.nz/home-ready

❗️Upcoming test of the tsunami sirens at Ōrewa Beach.
Kia Ora Aucklanders
👉🏼Our bi-annual test of the two tsunami sirens at Ōrewa will take place on the first day of daylight saving, this Sunday 29th September, at midday. Don't be concerned if you're in the area and you hear the test.
Located at Ōrewa beach, the tsunami sirens give a combination of alert sounds and voice instructions advising what actions to take in a real emergency.
📢The two sirens at Ōrewa were installed in 2020. It’s important that we test the sirens twice yearly, to make sure they are in good working order.
A new project is underway to consider the best way to warn all of the Auckland residents and visitors to the region’s coastal areas of their tsunami risk.
Siren testing is a good prompt to remind all Aucklanders that the whole coastline is at risk of tsunami. In the event of a tsunami threat, an Emergency Mobile Alert will be broadcast to all capable mobile phones. News and social media channels will be used to alert Aucklanders as well.

Our South Auckland Response Team is holding a training day for our new recruits at the Upper Mangatāwhiri Campground, Hūnua Ranges - this weekend, 21-22nd September.
If you’re out and about in the area during that time you might see extra activity. We’ll be training with other agencies, and you could see emergency response vehicles, don’t be concerned.
Training exercises are an important way for us to test our systems and readiness to respond when we need to.
Read on to find out why our volunteer response teams are so important 👇🏽
What are New Zealand Response Teams?
New Zealand Response Teams (NZRTs) are groups of people from the community, who volunteer their time in emergencies to help when emergency services are overwhelmed. Our Auckland Response Teams are the hands-on teams we might deploy as part of our response to an emergency.
When activated, the Auckland Response Teams are an operational response arm of Auckland Emergency Management, and their activities are coordinated through the Emergency Coordination Centre. They are trained to professional standards as emergency resources that can complement or support emergency services, if the size of an incident or event is beyond what they can usually manage.
