The Blue Light Sailing Voyage trip was an absolute blast. I got to experience what it was like to steer a legitimate sailing ship, learned all about how the crew navigates throughout the ocean, and how to maintain the ship's condition by keeping everything clean and functional. Each day brought new challenges and adventures from cooking large quantities of food for the rest of the crew to sailing our way through harsh weather whilst the boat was keeling over. I got to meet so many new friends and work together with them as a team, which ended up being a very rewarding and memorable experience.
Living on a ship was like nothing I’ve ever done before. We all shared a small living space within the cabin, took turns preparing enormous meals in the galley, and learned all about the different parts of the ship. I also discovered the importance of ship maintenance. We were split into 4 groups, A B C and D, and each took turns keeping different sections of the ship clean and pristine. It was hard work, but knowing that we were all responsible for the ship’s well-being made me appreciate the experience even more.
Overall, the voyage taught me many valuable lessons about teamwork, responsibility, and leadership. I would love to do something like this again sometime.

On the 7th October 2024 I departed for my 5 day adventure on Lion NZ surrounded by water. Not knowing what to expect I was nervous but excited for what was to come. When we first got on the boat we learnt health and safety, names of the crew, and what to except on the voyage. After that we were off the port and sailing away. Over the next couple of days we had opportunities to sail the boat, jump in the cold waters at 7am, use the pump toilets, talk and make lifelong friends, listen to the stories from the crew, and sleep on a maxi-yacht. Being on the water was such a magical experience for me. I loved the quiet environment and being surround by Tangaroa and away from the city made me come back to the realisation that there is something bigger than us out there.

During the school holidays Cambridge Blue Light had the opportunity to send a local youth on a week long voyage sailing around the Hauraki Gulf on board the Steinlager 2 Yacht.
Poppy from Cambridge High School NZ was given this experience and from what she told us “it was a truly amazing experience and definitely one of the best things that I have ever done!”
She learned all things sailing, how being part of a team is the way to go on a boat and to appreciate the simple things in life.
We hope to give another youth this opportunity next year.
Thank you to Bridge Club Cambridge for kindly donating to Cambridge Blue Light. Your contribution helped make this experience happen.

The last week of Blue Edge has arrived and the team played a fun game of one touch to celebrate and recover for our longest day.
The longest day starts tomorrow at 5am and the first stop is climbing the Hakarimatas.
The last stop will be back in Cambridge when they will attempt to pull one of the local fire trucks.
Tomorrow is going to be a exhausting, challenging and fun day!
Also big thanks to all the parents who have been supporting their kids and doing early morning drop offs during term 3.
Best of luck for tomorrow team!
This morning we had our last guest speaker for Blue Edge.
Constable Mike who previously went to Cambridge Middle and High School, spoke to the group.
