Meet another artist in Cover to Cover - feat. Opawa 45s!

Martin Sagadin is an acclaimed genderq***r artist and filmmaker. In 2018 they finished a Masters in Fine Arts - at the University of Canterbury and have also been teaching there. They are also a painter, a visual artist and have exhibited at a number of galleries in New Zealand: The Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū, Wellington Art Gallery, NEXT Gallery, Chambers Gallery, Absolution Gallery and others.

Here's what Martin has to say about their album of influence:
Olias of Sunhillow was one of my favourite albums when I was a kid -even before I knew English. Parts of the album are in a made-up language and it presents an intricate fantasy story. This album has only grown on me since with Jon Anderson's epic layered vocals and lush orchestration. Visually, this album has also impacted my painting practice.

We're showcasing artists and musicians with a range of styles and approaches in their mediums. Next up in Cover to Cover - feat. Opawa 45s is Michael Leung.

Michael Leung shared with us a beautiful and influential track that's on steady rotation on his playlists:
"This tune has been on my playlist for at least the past 4 years of my life.
Although I mix and try to produce Drum and Bass, the slowed down lush selections have always been the ones to tickle my senses.
This album and this song have been with me through some pretty tough times and big changes in my life over the years and I think it is one that I will always come back to for many days to come."
Come and see how this translates visually next week!

Hole - Violet (Official Video) 08/08/2020

Another of our exhibiting artists that we are very excited to be showing at Cover to Cover - feat. Opawa 45s is Dawn Marble.

Ashlin/Dawn (they/she). They are a multidisciplinary artist from Ōtautahi. Their work explores hysterical pop fictions across photography, film, music, sound and writing. Currently they put creative energies in teaching at Lincoln High School.
"Live Through This, the album by Hole put the spark of messy femme in my heart. Told me I could be just as angry and gross as the grunge boys. First album I learnt on guitar and covered with my high school band."

The Undertones - Teenage Kicks (Official Video) 07/08/2020

Who else do we have instore for your visual pleasure at Cover to Cover - feat. Opawa 45s? George Fraser!

George Fraser's work is based around a love of pop culture and iconography. Generally there’s at least a nod to social politics. Key influences are punk and music culture and a love of lowbrow imperfect objects. George uses found objects as a base for most of his works which are heavily based around using what’s in hand and creating a sustainable practice. Currently his mainly drawing based practice is evolving into a new direction using needle and thread to create embroidered pieces.
Teenage Kicks by the Undertones lends inspiration to his upcoming Cover to Cover work.

The Undertones - Teenage Kicks (Official Video) John Peel's favourite ever song and not hard to understand why. Timeless teenage frustration in 2 and a half minutes of raucous pop punk heaven. Play it loud...

We asked her about the influence on her work for the show:
Slade covered "Darling Be Home Soon" by John Sebastian on a live album. The line "For the great relief of having you to talk to" always stuck with me.

Loose Joints "Is It All Over My Face" (Original Male Version) 07/08/2020

Time for us to introduce you to some of the artists showing in our upcoming exhibition Cover to Cover - feat. Opawa 45s!

First up is Gemma Syme.

Gemma Syme is a multi-talented, colourful force of energy. She's part of art rock band Fantasing, Femscrem and also produces solo under Instant Fantasy
Here's some words by Gemma about the song that's influenced her work for Cover to Cover:

" It reminds me of when I used to go out in Christchurch in the early 2000s. I also found the 12" single of it when I was in New York in 2005. I'm interested in playing around with how women are presented in music store spaces and in the music industry in general."

Loose Joints "Is It All Over My Face" (Original Male Version) This is way too obvious a song for me to be posting, but I incredulously found that no one had posted this unreleased, original, male vocal version yet and t...

Another powerhouse of creativity that we're showcasing as part of Mixtape: Pride Exhibition Opening w/ PGX is the amazing Oona Verse/Bek Coogan.

From Palmerston North, based in Karori, Wellington, Coogan was recently described by the Audio Foundation’s ( AK) “Nowhere Festival ‘ – as “ NZ’s first lady of Rock’ n’ Roll Yodelling and a veteran of counter culture.”

Coogan likes to test what art is.

Coogan’s long-term desire is to rupture individualist neo-liberal consciousness with one collective yodel. ( kind of like a Joyous Rock Opera ).

Until then the yodel comes out the end of a vivid pen when hearing the call of the mystery solo.

Another peek into the workings of our wonderful Mixtape: Pride Exhibition Opening w/ PGX artists:

"Through my practice I experiment with objects and materials which mimic the feelings of bodily sensations and play off the desire to touch. My works utilise movements between textures – soft and hard, glossy and matte – to draw on the colours and forms of natural and physical source material. I aim to acquire a sense of the familiar becoming strange, or alternatively, the strange becoming familiar, through acknowledgment of the underlying grotesque which I perceive as prominent in everyday life." Timothy McLaughlin

A young, up and coming artist from Christchurch, LeRoy Odom works mainly in digital design and symmetry. We're looking forward to seeing a study in new materials for his practice at Mixtape: Pride Exhibition Opening w/ PGX

Louie Zalk-Neale is a q***r artist, costume designer and performer based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington. They use drawing and painting as a way of visualising and designing costume garments. The timelessness of faded old paper and dark ink rightfully suggests that gender non-conformity and q***rness have existed continuously throughout history, and will into the future. Louie transforms their drawings into wearable costumes, and performs in them, creating new logics to understand people's bodies – thinking of clothing, gender and movement. They aim to submerge the audience into their q***r lived experience to demonstrate the potential freedom from society’s limiting structures.

Join us this Wednesday at Mixtape: Pride Exhibition Opening w/ PGX to see their work.

Mixtape sees a range of artists from mid career to emerging and those currently studying or exploring their practices - a cross section of our community making fresh new works!

Tiffany Furness mainly makes use of water colours, and enjoys painting somewhat whimsical scenes with bright colours. She doesn't often use conventional canvases, rather preferring to paint on other media (rocks, plant pots, other people etc.).

07/03/2020

Time to introduce you to some of the wonderful artists in Mixtape: Pride Exhibition Opening w/ PGX opening next week.

Aaron Kong is an art clown currently based in Christchurch. Working predominantly in sculpture and performance, his practice looks at digital space and revolves around the notion of identity as a performance, looking at the slippages between physical and online identity through the lens of pop and contemporary culture. Past works include painting himself green, a glory hole installation and bejewelled condom earrings.
