With what we have - Resist!
Nina Simone declared that it is “the duty” of artists to reflect the times they are living in. This exhibition of painting, textile art, clothing and narrative is the response of two artists to a society that seems largely content to continue business as usual in the face of social and environmental degradation. As artists, we resist this with the creative tools at our disposal - fabric, paint, and even the vernacular performativity of our bodies going about our day to day lives.
Donna Demente
Oamaru artist Donna Demente's work is known throughout Aotearoa for its mysterious and eerie presence focusing on 'quizzical, curious, knowing and world weary' glances and gazes of her portrait subjects. They loom large, echoic of the Renaissance, Romantic and religious iconography of her European heritage. The subject of these recent works is a fascination for the extraordinary beauty of the eyes of Palestinians in the face of extraordinary dehumanisation and ongoing genocide. Subjects include people she has corresponded with and images from videography by Palestinian artists abroad (used with their permission.) Any proceeds will be used to assist this extremely vulnerable population.
Briar Cook
Briar Cook is an artist and writer based in Ōtautahi. This exhibition marks the relaunch of independent clothing label ‘rethreads’ which is deliberate resistance to clothing that exists only to be briefly consumed. However, it no longer feels ‘enough’ to just make clothes, and the various flags on display have been made in solidarity with the Palestinian people, who continue to exist on their land despite decades of deliberate degradation and for the last 11 months, in the face of unthinkable horrors. Proceeds from flags will assist in, among other projects, the procurement of a water filtration truck for several families in Gaza without access to clean running water.
Welcome to Absolution! Ever wondered where ewe are? Located right here in the , you can find our back entrance through the Hereford Street car park- and inside you’ll find sick tattys and APP member body piercers!

Our next exhibition from and .ist opens Monday the 8th at 6pm!
Barney was adopted from Dogwatch Sanctuary Trust in September 2021. He is a rescue Labrador x something, 41kg, somewhere around six years old. He likes food, wearing clothes and peeing on telco boxes. As a rescue, he has issues with white utes, men in hi-vis, and other dogs. Barney is like Marley from Marley & Me (2008) if the owners weren’t awful and also he is still alive which is nice. We love him very much. This exhibition shows some photographs and drawings of Barney.
