A good massage has the ability to make you feel relaxed or invigorated, and is certainly an important element of self-care.
Massages vary greatly in technique and pressure. If you want to get the maximum benefit from your massage it’s important to understand how they differ, so you can choose the right one for you, at the right time.

Many of the techniques used in a deep tissue massage and a sports massage are the same, designed to reduce muscle tension in the body. These are both intense massages, more so than a relaxing Swedish or hot stones massage.

What you need to know to determine the right massage treatment for you.

A Deep Tissue massage will focus on treating muscular tension by removing knots and kinks in the connective tissues that surround your joints and muscles. It works deeper than the surface to uncover the troublesome spots, usually tense from stress and daily living. Think along the lines of a knotted tense shoulder!

- encourages blood flow to the joints and connective tissues to release tension in tight muscles.
- relief of chronic pain.
- help to reduce the symptoms of anxiety

I recommend booking a deep tissue massage if you experience any of these issues:

• Tight, tense muscles throughout the body
• Anxiety or high-stress levels
• Conditions such as sciatica and fibromyalgia
• Chronic pain
• Limited mobility

Sports Massage

It is a common misconception that you have to be a professional athlete to benefit from a sports massage. While it is the most popular form of massage for sportspeople, as it can help to prevent injury and aid recovery times, it can also be incredibly beneficial to anyone who leads an active life.

A sports massage therapist will focus on the manipulation of soft connective tissue, such as tendons, ligaments and muscles, to reduce tension and decrease the chance of injury from sporting activities. They are experienced in treating common sports-related injuries, such as strained hamstrings or torn ligaments, to promote healing and relieve pain.

Unlike a deep tissue massage, which is usually administered across the whole body, a sports massage pinpoints specific areas that tend to be problematic, or certain muscle groups that are tight or stressed from repetitive movements. So, whether you are a champion marathon runner or have been tied to your desk all day and are feeling the strain, a therapeutic sports massage is a great way to relieve the pain and tension in areas of the body that have been overworked.

A sports massage will be beneficial if you want to:
• Warm-up or cool-down after strenuous activity
• Minimise the risk of a sports-related injury
• Reduce the pain associated with repetitive movements
• Improve posture or flexibility
• Recover faster after activity

In summary, a deep tissue massage is the best option for relief from general pain and tension; whereas a sports massage will suit anyone looking for the treatment of injuries or repetitive sprains or strains that have built up over time in specific soft tissue and muscle areas.

Arthritis is a very common condition, and one of the most painful, which causes inflammation of joints. There are more than 100 different types of arthritis, which all have different symptoms
The most common types are Osteoarthritis (OA), and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).

Symptoms range from pain, swelling, inflammation, redness, to reduced range of motion and stiffness, limiting a persons movement and affecting everyday activities. It can seriously inhibit a person’s ability to maintain a normal or active lifestyle.

By improving blood flow, massage can ease this joint inflammation and pain.

By Having a massage your quality of life may improve, by increasing your ability to perform daily activities, walking longer distances and taking part in more outdoor activities, engaging more in social activities and reducing the need for pain relief.

Massage can vary in intensity. Depending on the type of massage and a person’s needs and preferences, it can be firm, gentle, calming, or invigorating.

Myofascial release is a common massage technique that manipulates the connective tissues or fascia around body structures, including blood vessels, nerves, and muscles. A therapist stretches and releases the connective tissues over the painful areas. Which can lead to reduced pain and increased motion especially for people living with knee OA.

If you are silently suffering, give massage a go, you may be surprised.

A full consult will be given prior to any massage treatment
*(When having an RA flare up massage is not advised)

My son is raising funds for the National Heart Foundation
Please give generously, this foundation helped save his dads life.

He has set his goal high in hoping to fundraise as much as possible ,as we know how much heart surgery costs,

here is the link to his donation page and a few words from Tyson

"This is a a charity close to my heart (ha ha excuse the pun) as two years ago my dad had to undergo open heart surgery and we are very lucky to still have him in our lives.

Please help me raise funds for NHF, by giving whatever you can using the 'Give Now' button.

Your donation will go towards funding vital research into the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of heart disease. With your help this year, we can continue to support over 175,000 Kiwis and their families who have been affected by heart disease.

Thank you for your generosity, it means a lot to my family, and my dad is ever so grateful for what they were able to do for him.

Lower Back Pain (LBP)

A common, painful condition affecting the lower portion of the spine.
Low back pain is caused by injury to a muscle (strain) or ligament (sprain).
Common causes include improper lifting, poor posture, lack of regular exercise, a fracture, a ruptured disc or arthritis.
Other causes, Prolonged sitting and laying down, sleeping in uncomfortable position, poor fitted backpack,
Often, the only symptom is pain in the lower back.
Most low back pain goes away on its own in two to four weeks. Massage and pain relievers can help.

To prevent back pain and improve your daily habits, you may:
•Achieve and maintain a healthy weight
•Avoid carrying too-heavy loads and bend with your knees when you lift heavy items
•Eat a nutrient-rich diet with enough calcium, vitamin D and phosphorus to build healthy bones
•Exercise consistently, incorporating both stretching and core strengthening exercises
•Ensure you use an ergonomic workstation that supports correct posture
•Sleep on your back, use a supported pillow under your knees
•Wear appropriate, properly fitting footwear that supports optimal posture

Make a few simple adjustments to improve your posture:
•Engage your abdominal muscles
•Maintain a head position that’s in line with your body to avoid straining your neck forward
•Roll your shoulders down and away from your ears
•Sit with your feet on the ground and avoid crossing your legs
•Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, with weight distributed evenly across both your feet

If all else fails, come see your friendly myotherapist, to get yourself sorted and on the right track to a healthier back,
(especially with Functional Release Cupping, to loosen those tight back muscles and fascia. my favourite warm up)

MYOTHERAPY - WHAT IS IT YOU ASK......

Myotherapy is a noninvasive manual therapy that helps treat pain caused by injuries or issues with your muscles or soft tissue.
You treat both the immediate symptoms and the underlying cause, be it behavioural, postural, muscular imbalance or structural.

Myotherapy is an advanced form of remedial massage. During myotherapy, a therapist uses trigger point release and a variety of other techniques such as Functional Release Cupping, PNF stretching, NMT (inc Trigger points), Dry needling, and Kinesio taping to relieve muscle and myofascial pain. Of which I am qualified in all of these techniques.

Myotherapy can:
• improve chronic low back pain
• reduce delayed onset muscle soreness
• reduce stress and anxiety
• increase quality of life and positive well-being
• assist with pain management

Additionally, evidence has emerged over the last 10 years to suggest that treating painful trigger points may help aid muscle contractions and optimize muscular movement

Myotherapy can be used for sprains, joint pain, back pain, poor posture, headaches, neck stiffness, sports injuries and OOS

Myotherapy consists of assessing, treating, and managing the pain associated with soft tissue injury and restricted joint mobility which has been caused by myofascia or muscle dysfunction.

Come and see me for your assessment, and learn how to manage your pain and start making corrections for a better working body

I have just returned from Auckland after completing the much anticipated ACE courses of Functional Release Cupping and Dry Needling.

Ever feel you need to be really stretched and want more movement thru your body then FRC is for you!

And if you want to get rid of those trigger points giving you the referral pain then switch out my fingers and elbows for Dry Needling, more targeted, more effective, quicker response.

I will be slowy introducing these modalities into my practice so if you want try either modality out don't hesitate to ask

Yours in motion.
