Born in Ashburton, New Zealand, in 1937, Robert McDowell is a currently active professional architectural, product & graphic designer, and artist. Since 1972, he has garnered worldwide acclaim for his captivating artwork, which has enriched businesses, family homes, and art collections alike. Rob's talent has earned him numerous prestigious awards, including the Kelliher, Ashburton Trust, Montana Art, Michael Matter, and David Watt Ford Awards. In addition to his impressive accolades, he has also shared his expertise at private workshops and Canterbury and Otago University extension schools, further enriching the artistic community with his knowledge and passion. His contributions to the art world have left an indelible mark, solidifying his status as a renowned figure in his multifaceted fields of expertise.

About Rob McDowell

My early work experience was in the fields of printing, graphic design, architectural design, and a period of engineering, machinery design and development.

Draughtsmanship was my forte, so early paintings were pretty much representational and my portraits and landscapes found a ready following. However, my interests are wide and varied and I was soon studying fine arts and scooping up everything where and when I could. Actually working with known and established creative people proved to be most beneficial, and I was, and am, truly fortunate to have some wonderful tutor and artist friends.

Although I continue to have a strong interest in the figurative, I am happy to explore beyond any constraints and work in whatever manner and medium that inspiration happens to take me.

I was born in Ashburton, New Zealand, in 1937, educated at local schools and Canterbury and Otago University Extension Schools and have tutored and painted professionally since 1974. Other interests include philosophy and writing, travel, and designing and inventing all sorts of things.
