This morning I have added โ Caligulaโ seeds to the seed library. Kindly donate by Disa who grew a great crop last year in Green Island . I am going to try them this year , as I think a great alternative to cucumber. ๐ฑ๐ฑ
Really great read , it highlights the benefits of saving local seed , and also the benefits of growing from seed ๐ฑ๐ฑ๐ฑ
I really hope this encourages more people to save and share seed locally so we all benefit from growing great plants and produce ๐
Why raising plants from seed is so important - KoruKai Blog Why raising plants from seed is so important โ and why you may want to start saving your own seeds When I started gardening 15 years ago, I thought raising plants from seed would be quite difficult. I did not see myself as a green thumbed person and I was certainly not confident with starting a ga...

OPENING
Sat. 2nd September
Plants from $2
A busy afternoon restocking the seed library , there are some new seeds in both the vegetables and flowers. It is great to see the seed library being used by so many in our community, we should have lots of very pretty or/and productive gardens out there this summer ๐ฑ๐ป๐ฅฆ๐บ
I came home on Sunday to find a mother and daughter standing at the seed library with a list of the things they want to grow this season , after a chat they told me I had inspired them ๐that made my day , and made me feel what I do is worthwhile. Thank you .
Annie-Kate from the Ocean View Orchard has kindly donated some blackcurrant prunings , I will put them in a bucket underneath the seed library for anybody who would like some to plant ๐ฑ๐ฑ๐ฑ
The other Evening Sharron kindly dropped off a large bag of giant sunflower seeds from her daughters garden. I have just added some to the seed library.
Giant sunflowers ๐ป are a great way to get children interested in growing things , waiting to see whose grows the tallest etc . They are easy to start in pots and plant out once the frosts are passed or direct sow once it warms up.
As well as being stunningly gorgeous they are great for insects and birds.
So really everyone should grow a few sunflowers ๐ป
A really interesting read , I have these seeds in the seed library for anyone wanting to give them a go really easy to germinate ๐ฑ
Well the cold wind today made my time in the garden very short, so that made time to stock up the seed library, there are a few new additions as I met with Emma-Kate from St Kilda seed and seedling stall
And she has shared some new varieties for us to share including native spinach , triamble pumpkins and a couple of varieties of beans .
There is a good selection of poppy seeds which are great to sow now as they need cold to germinate.
These cold miserable days are a great time to start planning for spring planting and get our seeds ready for sowing once the weather warms a little.
Last weekend I put up a small walk in plastic house on my deck for seed raising ( $59 from M20 ) and I have to say I canโt believe how warm it is in there, I will be trying some early planting to see how they go , Roll on Spring ๐ฑ๐ฑ๐ฑ๐ชด
Paulette has kindly dropped off some small bags of Mฤori Potatoes.
As the weather is a bit hit and miss at the moment I will keep them in the dry inside , if you would like some PM me and I will leave some out for you to collect ๐Karen
Mizuna , is a great salad green to grow all year round , it is fast to germinate and grow. The photos show the life cycle of the plant . Pick outside leaves to encourage new growth, can be eaten when really small through to maturity. Allow a few plants to flower and then go to seed. The small black seeds inside the long slender pods are easy to scatter and gently press into the soil. You will probably find a few plants popping up around as the seeds have dispersed themselves ( free plants )
Gardening in this way ensures you will always have seed to grow new plants .
I grow both green and red coral mizuna, both varieties of seeds are in the Brighton Plant Stall and Seed Library
Coriander prefers the cooler weather , which also means it wonโt bolt and go to seed. Make sure to let a few plants flower which in turn will create seed.
Simply sprinkle on the ground and lightly press down , seed is pretty fast to germinate. Seeds can also be used in cooking.
Seeds are available in the seed library.
Daucus Carota , Ornamental Carrot has to be one of my favourite plants in my garden , easy to grow from seed ( seeds in the seed library) I love all the stages of its growth, the lovely Ferny foliage , the flower buds , the flowers and the magnificent seed heads . The flowers even dry well. As they are easy to grow I planted early seeds inside for planting out in September and then started another lot in January which is why I still have flowers. I also love the fact they are tall and not to dense so they add a lot of interest to the overall garden .

Even I am not a keen enough gardener to be outside in this weather so great to be warm inside making seed envelopes out of old magazines and making cards to go with the flowers I sell. Thankyou to the kind person who put some sunflower and green Carex seeds in my mailbox ๐for the seed library.
Great info for saving seeds
I had a great catch up with Emma-Kate from St Kilda Seed and Seedling Stall. Earlier in the week and she has kindly given us more seeds and a few seedlings ( some I need to grow on a bit ) I have added some nasturtium and sweet pea seeds to the library, more to come. Also my friend Sue has given me some dahlia tubers to share, the are a single red flower. These and some oak leaf lettuce seedlings are now under the seed library for anyone who would like them.
I also have an abundance of miners lettuce seedlings , let me know if you would like some and I can dig some up and leave out for you . Happy gardening ๐ผ๐๐ฑ๐ Karen
The seed library has had a lot of visitors, which is fantastic, so this afternoon I spent a couple of hours restocking and adding some new varieties of seeds. As the weather is changing and our gardens are starting to slow down and hibernate for winter now is a good time to start planning next seasons garden.
Itโs also a great time to collect seed before cutting back plants.
In the coming months when weeding and tidying keep an eye out for self sown seedlings ( free plants ) if they are in the wrong place either move or pot up to grow on and plant out later ๐ธ๐ผ๐
A lovely person has left some bluebell bulbs , they are now in the Seed Library.
Please note the seed library will be operating all year , sorry if there was any confusion itโs the plants that will be back in spring.
Using my homegrown Quinces to make chutney, I love to make jams and chutneys to use all year round , always something on hand in my well stocked cupboard ๐๐๐ซ๐
Easter Monday will be the last day for my plant stall until spring , I will continue to sell plants on Marketplace, type in my name Karen Musk and save me as a favourite seller and you will get my listings.
The Seed Library will be going all year, it has been really busy these last few weeks , but there are still heaps of seeds available. Thankyou to those people who have dropped seeds into my mailbox it is really appreciated ๐บ๐ฅฌ๐๐๐๐ณ
Whilst stuck at home and under the weather with Covid, I have put a lot of time into the seed library , adding info sheets to most seeds , inspiration from Emma-Kate Lamb, where possible I have images , a few personal tips and google info re edible flowers etc. All seeds are free , please only take what you will use. And please donโt take the info sheets , photograph them for later reference.
There is currently a good variety and flower and vegetable seeds in the library, with new varieties being added as I still have quite a lot to harvest.
Donate spare seed if you have any for others to share.
Thanks Karen
Brighton Plant Stall and Seed Library is at 13 Pearse Street Brighton
Someone has kindly left these Norfolk Pine cones for the Seed Library , if anyone is keen to give growing from them a go let me know and I can leave out for you to collect. According to google you crack open the cone to retrieve the seeds for planting.
Have you ever tried growing Linseed ? Well after seeing a delicate blue flower in my sonโs garden and he had no idea what it was PlantNet told me it was flaxseed / linseed so I planted some from my baking cupboard and hey presto they sprouted in no time . Then I discovered you can eat them as sprouts or small shoots and they are really tasty even my granddaughter agreed . And then of course grow some through to enjoy the flowers . I canโt wait to plant more of them . I have bagged up some and put them in the seed library if anyone wants to give them a go ๐
Yesterday I was given some Black Iris seeds , by googling how to grow Iris from seed I discovered that the seeds need to be stratified ( put in the fridge ) before planting.
Unfortunately I donโt have the time to give planting details for all the seeds in the seed library, if in doubt , please use google it is a great resource for information. How did we ever manage before ? ๐๐ผ๐๐๐บ
Itโs a prickly job getting seeds out of a Globe Artichoke, definitely requires gloves . I grow these just for show , I love the leaves , the artichoke itโs self and the beautiful thistle like flower.๐
Not exactly a day for out in the garden , but a good day to package and sort seeds for the seed library. Thank you for the seed and bag/ envelope donations they are much appreciated. It is really rewarding to see the amount of people using the seed library and to think there are that many fellow gardeners out there ๐๐บ๐๐๐๐ณ
Great tips for saving seed from your own garden , and maybe donate any surplus to the seed library for other to enjoy ๐ผthanks Karen
This weekend I made a concrete leaf , that I will use in my garden filled with water for birds and insects. I got the idea from seeing one that my friend Colleen Fletcher has , I went home and looked on Pinterest to see how-to do it, I still have to seal the concrete to stop the water evaporating . I will definitely be making more .
Itโs a busy time collecting seeds both flowers and vegetables to share in the Seed Library , and remembering to label them as I go.
Packaging up is a rewarding job on a wet day when not much can be done in the garden ๐บ๐
What a fantastic season we are having for Monarch butterflies , I have 3 in my garden every day . I have just hatched my second lot of caterpillars ๐ and again have given most away as my plants have still not fully recovered from the first round. Reading other peopleโs posts they seem to be in the same boat. It makes having a flower filled garden very rewarding ๐บ๐ผ
Today was a great day for collecting seaweed from our local beach for the garden , some of the smaller stuff will go straight on the garden , while the larger bits will be soaked to create a seaweed tea to water into pots etc.
I am all for free nutrition for our gardens another favourite of mine is coffee grounds mixed with untreated sawdust and generously scattered around.
I have a plant stall at 13 Pearse Street Brighton, all plants are grown on site and range $1-5 each , mostly perennials, herbs and succulents.
Most plants are $3 each or 4 for $10 , with a $1 specials table and some larger plants at $5 each . I also list other offerings on market place.
With donations from the Brighton Garden Club and others I have set up a community seed library in my Driveway at 13 Pearse Street Brighton. All seeds are free , donations of excess seed are very welcome to be shared around. Currently their is a good selection of flower and vegetable seeds on offer.
I will update what is available regularly.
I have created a plant stall in my driveway to satisfy my love of growing plants from seed and propagation, and selling them at very reasonable prices. The seed library is my way of giving back to the community and encouraging everyone to give growing from seed a go , whether flowers or vegetables or hopefully both. All seeds are free , and donations of excess seed to be shared are very welcome ๐ผ
