🌟 Introducing Lívia, Our Collaborating PhD Student! 🎓

Lívia is a Brazilian physiotherapist that moved to Aotearoa to do her PhD at the University of Otago.

🔍 She is focused on developing work that can bridge the gap between academia and the real world. Her PhD investigates how Māori with chronic pain represent and symbolize the pain they experience. She is curious about meaningful ways of collecting and interpreting data, including participatory research methods such as arts-based and collaborative ethnography. She is excited to collaborate with CMOR whānau.

Andrés, a physical therapist from Argentina, is focused on developing an objective outcome measure for assessing physical function in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Based in Wellington, his expertise in chronic pain, sports injuries, and outcome measures brings valuable insights to our research collaboration.

Exploring the current and future osteoarthritis health service delivery needs in Aotearoa New Zealand Globally, osteoarthritis (OA) is a leading cause of chronic pain and disability. In Aotearoa New Zealand, OA affects one in 10 people and prevalence is predicted to increase by 76% in the next 20 years due to obesity and population demographics and to drive healthcare costs up by 86%.

The Australia & New Zealand Musculoskeletal (ANZMUSC) Clinical Trials Network is a collaboration of clinical researchers, scientists, health professionals and consumers who are working to improve the evidence base of health through the conduct of high quality, multicentre randomised controlled trials; and the uptake of that evidence into practice and policy.

As part of the Network, ANZMUSC has a Consumer Advisory Group (CAG) to provide a mechanism for consumer input on ANZMUSC clinical trials and other activities undertaken by the network.

They are looking for 12 consumers with the following experience and attributes to apply to join the CAG:

👉 Have experience with one or more musculoskeletal conditions; or have experience as a carer for a close family member
👉 Have established consumer networks through association with consumer groups and/or communities
👉 Good analytical and well-developed communication skills (oral and written)
👉 Ability to work in a group and interact with health professionals, researchers and other ANZMUSC stakeholders
👉 Understanding of and commitment to helping improve musculoskeletal outcomes
👉 Ability to use online platforms to attend meetings e.g. Zoom, MS teams
👉 Overall computer literacy skills (including internet, email and word documents)

This one-day osteoarthritis symposium will bring together clinicians from all disciplines, health delivery organisations, consumers and researchers with a particular interest in managing osteoarthritis in Aotearoa.

A series of Keynote and Plenary speakers will present on innovative healthcare delivery models and clinical programmes for OA and OA research in Aotearoa to ensure you’re up-to-date on best-practice healthcare delivery for people with osteoarthritis.

All attendees will contribute to priority-setting for health delivery innovations and OA research in Aotearoa, and to help shape a recommended Osteoarthritis Strategy that will be presented to government ministers, health funders and policymakers at our end-of- year Osteoarthritis Summit.
