The Otago Badminton Association (OBA) is a not-for-profit organisation that promotes the game of badminton in Otago. This page has information about our activities, updates on events and how to get involved with Badminton in Otago.

A huge thanks to Cooke Howlison Toyota for allowing Junior Badminton Otago to travel to Invercargill in their community van for the South Island U13,U15,U17,U19 Teams Championships last week. The van was a wonderful help for transport to Invercargill and all the trips back and forth to the venue with loads of sports gear. THANK YOU!

Update on activities at the OBC - Wed nights continue for 3 more weeks, Thurs night on as usual apart from Oct 10. Fri shuttle time not on during school holidays. The term 4 junior coaching programs starts the week of Oct 14, please email [email protected] to inquire.
Badminton Otago Juniors are fundraising for their trip to the South Island Junior Teams Tournament in Invercargill on Oct 7 – 9 2024. They are selling delicious frozen cookie dough ($15) and frozen croissants ($20), both of which are then baked at home, more details about the products on the fundraising link. Orders close on Oct 6. The planned pick-up day for your order is Oct 24 from the OBC, St Kilda (preferred option), or at a later pre-arranged date/time/delivery (limited to Dunedin, Mosgiel, please inquire first). This weekend the 2024 Mainland Social Teams Event took place in Waimate. This is a seniors teams event aimed at those who didn't represent their South Island region in Div 1, 2, or 3 during the year. Update on senior sessions at OBC - this week (Wed 4th) the Wednesday night A grade 'come on the night' games start up again. Thursday night social/B grade games continue as usual. Adult beginners - last 4-week block for 2024 starts Monday 9th Sept.
The Badminton New Zealand Masters Champs are currently happening in Porirua with several Badminton Otago players taking part. Congrats to Elaine Hargreaves (Otago) and her partner Kelly Johnson for winning the womens doubles 40s and to John Schollum and Gary Dixon (both Otago) for getting runners up in men’s doubles 50s.
The last 4-week block of Adult Beginners for 2024 starts on September 9. Runs for 4 consecutive Mondays, Sept 9 to 30. ideal for adults new to or returning to badminton. $5 cash per night per adult, shuttles and rackets provided, just turn up with non-marking footwear, no rsvp required. A badminton Otago coach takes the sessions, very informal and fun, new things each week. The next Adult Beginners won't start until March-April 2025 so some along to this one!
A reminder that entries close this week on Friday 17 August for the Otago U13 and U17 tournaments held at the Otago Badminton Centre on 24-25 August.

Last weekend, on Aug 2 & 3, the senior Otago rep teams Otago 2 and Otago 3 competed in the S.Island teams competition in Invercargill. Well done to all players, we had a great mix of experienced and younger players and everyone had a great time. Big shout out to Lucy! The NZ junior champs have come to an end in Palmerston North, congrats again to the Otago juniors who played in the Mainland Badminton teams. Big shout out to the parents, coaches, helpers that made the trip too. Here's a photo of the Otago-based crew all together.

The NZ U13, U15, U17 and U19 national team champs are underway in Palmerston North, we have several Otago juniors playing in the Mainland Teams as well as Otago based coaches, managers and supporters up there with the teams. Update on OBA organised activities at the OBC - no Shuttletime or junior coaching Fri 28 June (Matariki), but coaching still on this Sunday. Several junior and adult activities take a break over the school holidays - see photo for details. Well done to our top senior rep team - Otago 1, who finished 4th in Slazenger Cup (and 10th overall in Division 1 and 2) at the Badminton NZ team champs held in Hamilton from June 7-9.
Update on what's happening this week at the OBC - June 10 is the start of the next 4 week block of consecutive Monday adult beginner nights. This Wednesday (June 12) we are holding Part 2 of the Otago senior rep trials, so no normal Wed games, this resumes Wed 19 June. Thursday games and all junior stuff as usual.
