When it comes to tackling climate change, the size of a country doesn't matter. In a rousing talk, renegade economist Kate Raworth, shares: If New Zealand can’t make a difference in the world, neither does Los Angeles which has not even got 4 million people. According to her, there is no single country in the world that can be described as developed because there is nothing developed or advanced about overshooting the planetary boundaries.

The position New Zealand councils have collectively adopted on climate change states that local governments have a responsibility to help our communities prepare for and adapt to the physical effects of climate change. They can work upwards with the national government and downwards with grassroots organisations, the private sector and the communities in responding to and managing the impacts of climate change. In the 2019-2022 triennium, Waikato Regional Council’s first Climate Action Committee employed a strategy to implement climate change considerations into everything the Council does, as described by the then Committee Chairperson Cr Jennifer Nickel who was recently re-elected for another term.

Climate Commons - Documentary Film (Official Trailer) 06/09/2022

We are delighted to announce the release of our documentary trailer . The film brings to light fascinating stories of climate action in New Zealand. In focus are ordinary people, academics, indigenous leaders, climate scientists, economists, sustainable businesses, and local government officials who share key insights and strategies for climate change adaptation and mitigation. As climate change is causing visible impacts and disruptions, collective grassroots action with a bottom-up approach gives us hope that we can transition into a low-carbon economy.

Thank you everyone who has contributed to make this project a reality. Please share the word and stay tuned for screening and release dates, by March 2023. To find out more, visit www.climatecommons.com
