Dental Holistix
We believe that good oral health is integral to overall wellbeing—we’re here to enhance your quality
Ancient Egyptian society, especially its affluent class including pharaohs, held cleanliness and oral health in high regard, evident in their pioneering efforts in toothpaste development.
The longevity of professional teeth whitening can vary depending on several factors including a person’s oral hygiene habits, dietary choices and lifestyle factors such as smoking or drinking coffee or red wine. Generally, professional teeth whitening can last anywhere from six months to two years. However, it's important to note that the effects may start to diminish gradually over time due to factors like staining from food and beverages, to***co use, and natural ageing of the teeth. To extend the longevity of your teeth whitening treatment, it's important to maintain good oral hygiene practices. At Dental Holistix we offer in-clinic teeth whitening treatments coupled with take-home whitening kits for maintaining your bright smile.
Interested in learning more about your treatment? We are happy to give you a firsthand look. Occasionally, our patients express curiosity about our treatments and how things are made, and we're completely open to taking you behind the scenes! All you have to do is ask!
Our oral health therapist Kara Williams loves the Curaprox single tuft brush, and you’ll love it too! Grab one the next time you’re in the clinic.
Our dentists strongly recommend flossing every day as an integral part of your oral hygiene routine. Brushing alone cannot remove all the food particles and plaque that accumulate between your teeth and along the gumline. Flossing helps to reach those areas that a toothbrush can't effectively clean, preventing the buildup of plaque, reducing the risk of gum disease, cavities and bad breath. Consistent flossing also promotes healthier gums by reducing inflammation and bleeding. Importantly, not everyone manages to physically get the string floss into all of the necessary spots, so if this is the case, please discuss with your dentist or hygienist whether interdental brushes or a water flosser might be a better alternative. In the long run, the few minutes spent cleaning thoroughly between all of your teeth each day will significantly contribute to your overall dental health and help you maintain a healthy, beautiful smile.
Happy Easter everyone! Hope you have a wonderful holiday with loved ones. The clinic is closed over the Easter break but we’ll be back next Tuesday. Looking forward to seeing you then.

Monday musings: an ode to gap-toothed beauties We believe in embracing the unique beauty of every smile. Society often dictates that teeth should be flawlessly aligned and impeccably white. However, true beauty transcends conventional standards.
We encourage all our patients, especially those with gap teeth, to embrace their natural features. Rather than viewing a gap as a flaw, consider it a distinctive attribute—a part of what makes you uniquely beautiful.
So to all our fellow gap-toothed friends, embrace it, celebrate it and let your inner beauty shine through.
The earliest evidence of dental implants dates back to around 600 AD. They were discovered by archaeologists studying the ancient Mayan civilisation. In their research, they uncovered skulls where teeth had been replaced with various objects, including carved stones like jade and seashell fragments. What's particularly fascinating about these discoveries is that, in some cases, these primitive dental implants had successfully fused with the jawbone. This fusion process, known as osseointegration, is still a critical measure of implant procedure success in modern dentistry. It underscores the enduring principles of dental implantation and the persistent quest for effective solutions to dental health issues throughout human history.
Mōrena! Here's this week's featured Te Reo dental term. There are a couple of ways to say dental floss in Te Reo; however, this one emphasises the action of flossing, translating more closely to "tooth cleaning thread." Keep your smile bright and healthy with regular flossing team!
Bathroom Bliss: Getting green with envy over this beautiful bathroom. What do you think? Would it make you spend more time on your oral health routine?
The best home remedy for wisdom tooth pain includes rinsing with warm to hot saltwater, using over-the-counter pain relief such as ibuprofen and paracetamol or preparations with cloves/clove oil, and applying an ice pack to reduce discomfort. While these measures can offer temporary relief, consult your dentist if the pain persists for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
Those little 'check-ins' are a big part of ensuring you have a comfortable experience.
Kia ora, hope you've had a good Rāhina (Monday).

Dental implants are a valuable investment in both your oral health and overall quality of life. In New Zealand, their cost can vary widely from around $4,000 to $7,000 per implant. The main variables in the cost of providing these treatments are the experience and level of ongoing postgraduate training undertaken by the surgeon, cost of implant components, the quality of ceramic work provided by the technician on the final crown, and whether additional procedures are required—such as bone or gum grafting. At Dental Holistix most standard implant procedures cost around $5,000. We are able to keep prices lower than many practices because we provide this treatment so routinely and entirely in-house. It is a quick and efficient procedure, we order implant components in bulk, and high quality ceramics ensure there are very few repairs or remakes required for the crowns. Implants provide exceptional durability, mimic natural tooth function and enhance your smile's aesthetics.
Additionally, dental implants help maintain bone density, averting future oral health concerns. The best part is that they can last a lifetime when properly cared for. The enduring benefits far exceed the initial expense, making dental implants a compelling and lasting solution for those looking to regain confidence with a permanent fix for missing teeth. Goodbye, 'murder-house' nightmares, and hello, dental dreams come true! 🌈 We're so glad your family loves their dental visits now. Out with the old, in with the new!
The decision between clear aligners and metal braces depends on individual dental needs and lifestyle. Clear aligners are ideal for those seeking a discreet, removable and comfortable orthodontic solution. Invisalign Clear Aligners (which we use at Dental Holistix) are practically invisible, allow normal eating and oral hygiene, and work well for mild to moderate alignment issues. In the last few years since Invisalign’s original patent expired, a wide array of other companies making clear aligners have appeared. We, like many other experienced clinicians have found that the results however are far better and more predictable with Invisalign aligners.
On the other hand, fixed metal or ceramic braces can be more effective for complex orthodontic problems and are therefore often favoured by specialist orthodontists. In simple cases, braces may often be faster than clear aligners. The choice ultimately rests on a thorough evaluation by your orthodontist or experienced dentist, who will recommend the most suitable option for your specific needs.

As the year comes to a close, we want to express our sincere gratitude for your continued trust in us. Your support has been instrumental in making 2023 a remarkable year for us.
This year has been one of growth and meaningful connections for our team. We've placed a strong emphasis on team building, nurturing a positive culture and prioritising mental health. These efforts included engaging activities like a group Master Chef challenge and a powerful WeCan empowerment workshop.
Our dedication to positive experiences extends to our patients as well. We've recently invested significantly in upgrading the clinic's reception and surgeries to enhance your experience during your visits. Local interior designer Lucy Furniss played a crucial role in creating a welcoming and relaxing environment.
Moreover, we are proud to share that our team is currently undergoing advanced training in periodontology. This commitment to ongoing education reflects our dedication to providing you with the best possible care.
Beyond the clinic walls, we've been active in supporting important causes within our community. Our involvement in events like the ‘Pink Walk and Run’, the Cancer Society's ‘Marathon In A Month’, and the New Zealand Dental Association's ‘Switch to Water’ challenge reflects our firm belief in contributing to positive change beyond dentistry.
This year, we also ventured into the community in a new way by participating in New Zealand's Fieldays event. Our exhibit booth in the Wellness Hub allowed us to connect with our community and share valuable insights on the importance of oral health and its link to overall wellness. It was a rewarding experience and marked a new chapter in our community outreach efforts.
Looking ahead, we are excited about the continued journey together and providing you with exceptional dental care in 2024. Thank you for being an integral part of the Dental Holistix family. We wish you and your loved ones a very Merry Christmas and a successful new year.
Please note that our clinic will be closed over the Christmas / New Year break. Our last day is Friday, 22 December, 2023, and we will re-open at 8:30am on Monday, 8 January, 2024.

Our dentists don’t recommend it as they believe the risks far outweigh the benefits. While it may remove surface stains, long-term use can damage your protective tooth enamel, potentially leaving teeth more vulnerable to issues like plaque and decay. It can also lead to exposed dentin, causing teeth to appear more yellow. Charcoal toothpaste often lacks fluoride, a vital mineral for enamel health and cavity prevention. Additionally, charcoal may stain teeth and dental restorations. With no scientific backing for its teeth-whitening properties, it's best to consult your dentist for a safer, trusted solution for teeth whitening.
Flying into the weekend! Happy Friday! Hope it’s not too hectic with the holiday prep.
