Yesterday our Kanapu team were at Te Kotahi Research Institute's Approaches to Benefit-Sharing Summit at The University of Waikato, learning more about this important kaupapa.

Access and benefit-sharing refers to how genetic resources may be accessed, and how users (e.g. a company) and providers (e.g. traditional knowledge holders) reach agreement on the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits that might result from their use. This is important to te ao Māori, that our traditional knowledge and whakapapa to our many kinds of taonga is acknowledged and respected.

We heard perspectives on access and benefit sharing in Australia and the Pacific as well as here in Aotearoa.

We have many insights to share with rōpū participating in Te Ako Rau who are all kaitiaki of mātauranga Māori in some shape or form. Kia kaha tātou!

Rawe!
What an awesome response we've had to our 'Approaches to Benefit-Sharing Summit'. All seats have been filled, and registrations have closed. If you've missed out, don't worry! A recording of the event will be made available on our website.

We have a hectic week ahead, but it'll be worth it to bring together this discussion. We're excited to have our guests from Australia and all over the motu contributing their perspectives to the event. It will be a big day to see the launch of our IP Guidelines, the culmination of many hours of work by the TKRI team.
Mauri ora!
