Half price fares to and from Waikato Hospital end on 30 September BUT it is still a great travel option.
The public transport subsidy pilot was launched on 16 October 2023 as a collaborative effort between Health NZ and Waikato Regional Council.
During the trial, passengers using their Bee Card to get on or off the bus at the Pembroke Street and Hague Road stops would get an automatic 50 percent discount on the fare.
Although the subsidy ends 30 September, public transport remains a cost-effective, stress-free, and environmentally friendly way to commute to Waikato Hospital.
Less fuss when you take the bus!

Supporting people: The most rewarding part of Bruce’s job
Bruce Malone has been an attendant for 25 years and his passion for supporting staff and patients remains as strong as ever.
“When I first started, I had to do a two-day St John First Aid course. This training has been invaluable both in my work and when I’m out in the community. I’ve had to use my first aid skills several times outside of work,” says Bruce.
A typical day for Bruce involves a variety of tasks, such as assisting nurses in the ICU with patient care or transporting patients to and from the operating theatre or clinics. “Every day is different,” Bruce says. “Good communication skills are a must. I enjoy meeting and talking to people.”
Bruce often encounters people who are lost in the hospital and, rather than just giving directions, he sometimes escorts them to their destination.
“It can be quicker and more reassuring for them,” he explains. “I also see people who are upset and I make sure to talk with them and offer a listening ear.”
One of the most challenging yet rewarding aspects of Bruce’s job is assisting in resus.
“Often, the family members are upset, and I might have to take the patient to the ward along with their family. I always walk at the pace of the slowest person to ensure everyone stays together.
“I see patients when they first arrive at the hospital and often follow their journey through to recovery. Sometimes, I even run into them months later in the community and they always thank me for helping them.”
“Once, I was on holiday in Alaska, and a woman recognised me because I had looked after her during her hospital stay.”
Bruce says that the job has evolved a lot since he first started, especially with the introduction of job lists on his phone.
“There’s a lot more walking these days. I can do up to 15,000 to 25,000 steps in a day - that’s around 18 kilometres. From April 2023 to April 2024, I completed 3 million steps.”
Bruce will turn 65 next year, but says he still has plenty of energy to continue working for a few more years. He is married, and together they have a daughter who currently lives in the Philippines. One of Bruce's favourite hobbies is fishing. He recently got a new 7-metre Game Fisher boat, which he and his wife take all over the country to explore different fishing spots.
Attendants Team Leader Lenny Hungwe has some great things to say about Bruce.
“I’ve worked with Bruce for over three years and he’s fun to be around - always lighthearted, with a great sense of humour, yet serious about his work. Bruce is one of the most recognisable faces in the hospital, always ready to lend a hand, whether it’s extra shifts or tough tasks.

👏 Today is ‘Thank an Orderly Day’, known as attendants here in the Waikato. 👏
Our attendants are an essential part of the clinical care and delivery teams. Attendants spend a lot of time with patients, supporting them through their journey with us and are often the people who wave them goodbye as they head back home.
They are among the unsung heroes of our hospitals, completing essential tasks such as patient transfers, guiding lost whānau, and delivering medical equipment and gases, medical records, flowers and mail. They operate the shuttle services, assist medical staff, and manage the waste and soiled linen – all on a 24/7 basis.
The Attendant team is diverse with people from many ethnicities, and a number of very dedicated staff that have served the hospital for over 50 years.
These team members are exceptionally hardworking, compassionate, and dedicated to their roles. We encourage the wider hospital community to take a moment today to acknowledge and thank them for the wonderful service and support they provide for us and those in our care.
Me mahi tahi tātou mō te oranga o te katoa – We should work together for the wellbeing of everyone ❤️

HEALTH WARNING OF EXTREME RISK FOR LAKE ROTOROA (HAMILTON LAKE) – STRONGLY ADVISED NOT TO USE THE LAKE FOR ANY RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES - 19 July 2024

The Public Health warning issued on 7 February 2024 for Lake Rotoroa (Hamilton Lake), has now been escalated to extreme risk. This is due to a highly significant rise in cyanobacterial levels. The cyanobacteria currently in the lake may produce toxins which are extremely harmful and may cause serious illnesses or death.

It is strongly advised not to undertake any recreational use of the lake whereby skin contact or ingestion of the water may occur. Recreation uses to avoid include kayaking, fishing, boating, swimming, or physical activities around the lake.

Dog owners should prevent their dogs from drinking or swimming in the water, as dogs are particularly sensitive to cyanobacteria and its related toxins.

If you have used Lake Rotoroa (Hamilton Lake) recently and have symptoms which include things as a rash, skin and eye irritation; allergy symptoms such as hayfever and asthma; or possibly stomach upsets including diarrhoea and vomiting, then please seek medical attention such as contacting your GP. Please note, these symptoms may not appear until some time after contact with the affected water.

National Public Health Service - Waikato would like to be informed about health problems that develop after exposure to any of the lakes with health warnings in place. Please contact on (07) 838 2569.

Waikato Hospital Laboratory gets an upgrade – a dream come true! 🔬🦠🧫
We are thrilled to announce a major upgrade to the Waikato Hospital Laboratory, with increased space, co-located services, and a brand-new Molecular Biology Laboratory.

This modern, fit-for-purpose environment with the latest technology is something the lab team has been waiting on for a while.

Lab manager Kay Stockman, who has been with us since 1979, says "This has been 50 years in the making. With the Molecular Biology Laboratory now co-located with the main lab, we can work more easily as a team and allow for future expansion and preparedness for any future infectious disease outbreaks."
The Molecular Biology Laboratory, which began in a tiny area in the ‘90s, started off processing 12,000 tests per year and now processes over 300,000 tests per year – a number that quadrupled during COVID-19.

"The team did an awesome job and didn’t complain. I see this new facility as their reward for all the work they went through during those challenging times."

The new facility is beautifully designed. The upgrade includes a revamp of the reception and administration areas, and the addition of a new Point of Care Testing Laboratory. These enhancements create a seamless flow into the new, purpose-built Molecular Biology Laboratory. Decorative features incorporating Māori design elements relating to nurturing and protecting whakapapa (genealogy), alongside images that are representative of the various laboratory specialties, are installed throughout on both walls and windows.

Molecular biology, a rapidly expanding technology for medical laboratory diagnostics, involves processes like PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) which isolate, extract and amplify DNA or RNA to identify disease states. This technology is now commonly used for diagnosing a wide range of medical conditions, including blood disorders, immune system markers, and infectious diseases. This technology has been pivotal in managing infectious disease outbreaks such as COVID-19, pertussis, measles, and VRE.

Kia kaha e hoamahi mā! 🧑🏻‍🔬👨🏽‍🔬

Congratulations to the Friends of Emergency Department (FEDs) Waikato volunteers for taking out the Volunteering Waikato, Team Of The Year Award for 2024 at a special awards ceremony held in Hamilton last night (20 June).
The Health New Zealand – Te Whatu Ora volunteer service from Waikato nominated the FEDs. This dedicated team makes a significant impact for our patients and their whānau in the Emergency Department every day. ❤️

They provide an important support role and are there to comfort, reassure, and assist patients. They are the link between staff and patient – often approaching staff with questions on behalf of the patient or their family members, assisting to make phone calls and providing that super important distraction of a hot drink, warm blanket, or quiet conversation. Charity thanks hospital staff across the Waikato

Night shift workers ending their shift at Waikato Hospital and their daytime colleagues on their way to replace them were greeted by the pleasant aroma of a BBQ on Thursday morning as a Hamilton charity cooked thousands of burgers to say thank you for their work.

Health NZ Waikato Interim Manager Health and Safety, Kent Holdsworth, said all dietary options were catered for at the event that was provided by the Hamilton branch of the international charity, the Rapid Relief Team (RRT).

“About 4000 fresh hamburgers were cooked by the RRT staff including vegetarian and gluten-free options with fruit pottles and bottled water also available.

“This is the second year in a row the RRT have donated their time and the food in appreciation for the work done by our staff at Waikato Hospital and what’s really humbling is learning a large number of the volunteers took time off work to be part of this event.”

RRT Hamilton leader, Braden Goddin said his team were all very pleased to be able to show the hospital staff their gratitude for the remarkable work they do every day.

“All our volunteers were able to recall when hospital staff helped them with skill, kindness and compassion in times of real need, so it's very pleasing to be able to show them in some small way how much we appreciate and respect them, and their special work.”

Kent said not only had the RRT provided this show of appreciation to staff at Waikato Hospital, they wanted to ensure workers in the district’s rural hospitals are included as well.

“As a result of their generosity, we have scheduled events to be held at our Tokoroa, Thames, Taumarunui and Te Kuiti hospitals over coming weeks.”

We want to hear from you if you have used palliative care services for adults (24+), either for yourself or a loved one, in the last five years.

We want to know what services work well, and what could be improved, so we can inform new nationally consistent models of adult palliative and end-of-life care services.

Our short survey is confidential, anonymous, and open to anyone in New Zealand:

Your feedback will inform how the redesign of how adult palliative care services and systems work together in Aotearoa New Zealand to better meet the palliative and end-of-life care needs of patients, whānau and communities.

Palliative care includes the services provided by GPs, community services, aged residential care facilities, hospitals, or hospices.

The survey is also open to those with work experience with these services.

This survey is part of our National Palliative Care Work Programme: https://www.tewhatuora.govt.nz/for-health-professionals/clinical-guidance/specific-life-stage-health-information/palliative/national-palliative-care-work-programme/
