Mya Komene from Aiga Tasi / Fraser High school was awarded the Braemar Charitable Trust & Health Pathway scholarship award valued at $1000 last Friday at The Kudos Science Excellence awards.

This prize is awarded to Science Spinners student who is on the academic path for a career in Health and Medicine.

“From the science expos I attended I was able to get a glimpse of what it looks like being in the different science industries and communities. This ignited my passion and gave me an opportunity to see possible career pathways in action and gave me a sense of what I could do in the future” Mya

Thanks to Mya’s family and friends for joining us to celebrate all the science achievements of the region!

Malo lava & congratulations Mya! 🏆

2021 Kudos Emerging Science Award winner, Dr Megan Grainger and her awesome team guided students through one of our mini-labs.

The NZ honey industry is a multi-million dollar industry and all batches of honey that are exported need to be tested using reliable methods.

At Science Spinners, students discovered how tests carried out by our senses can be subjective, and investigated how scientists use instruments to give reproducible and reliable results.

Students used a colour scale to grade honey then compared their results with that from a UV/visible spectrophotometer.

New Zealand produces an array of native honeys which all have unique properties, including colour, aromas and flavours.

Students also got to taste different New Zealand honeys and used flavour charts to help guide vocabulary to pick out different aromas and flavours of each floral type.

Pleasant aromas such as 'perfume', 'floral' 'orange skittle' were present…but some honeys had some aromas that were not quite so pleasant including 'ear wax', 'bottom of the shoe', and 'zoo'!

The students were grateful for the support and learning you gave them during the week! 👏🏽👏🏽🤩

Giving a shout out to Seb and Anuj from team Manaaki Manawa - Centre for Heart Research who led the "Body Rock'n lab" - medical/health lab, and they sure didn't hold back! 😂

They not only spent the whole day engaging our South Auckland tamaiti/rangatahi with practical, hands-on S.T.E.M and how it can apply in heart health monitoring, tools and medicine, but they joined in the Tik Toking too!

Learning Science takes on a whole new meaning at Science Spinners!

As a doctor, being Māori is my superpower - E-Tangata “When a MAPAS student finishes work, they often drive home to a whānau where their knowledge of the health system is so badly needed. We’re pursuing equity not just at mahi, but in our whare, at our marae, and in our whānau circles.” — Chloe Fergusson-Tibble.

ALERT

How awesome is this to commemorate Waitangi Day!

This special doodle was created by Māori digital artist Hori-Te Ariki Mataki, founder of Indigenous Creative Design] 👏🏽👏🏽

Google holds top spot for most visited site and a search engine processing 8.5 billion requests a day! Wow that’s huge!

Mataki is a multi-disciplinary digital designer, and though being contacted by giant Google he’s always been committed to giving back to his people and raising a community on the values his Tipuna instilled in him growing up in challenging circumstances. Challenges that still face many of our rangatahi and tamaiti today.

Through Ariki Creative he has kept his whānau values, pioneering a dedicated pathway for countless young Māori into the digital industry.

“In the community I grew up in there was not a lot of belief in what is possible, so part of what we do at Ariki is to push through what is possible, building inspiration and belief in what we can do.”

Ariki Creative has developed 25 young interns over five years, with some of them joining the team long-term”.

Thank you for your awesome work and for sharing your inspiring story Indigenous Creative Design]
