A few weeks ago Claudia Kogachi + Josephine Jelicich were interviewed by Graeme Douglas for The Good Oil, a podcast dedicated to long form conversations with Aotearoa artists who work with paint.
In this episode (Episode 20) Claudia and Josephine speak extensively on their most recent and most collaborative exhibition yet, Nina For Flowers, which closed in the Gallery just over a week ago 💐
This episode is now available to listen to along with an excellent interview with Hannah Ireland (Episode 9) ahead of a soon-to-be-released conversation with Laura Williams (Episode 21).
Thank you Graeme Douglas 🙏🏼

Laree Payne Gallery is delighted to present NINA FOR FLOWERS, an exhibition of new works by Claudia Kogachi () and Josephine Jelicich (.jelicich.furniture).
Artists’, collaborators and lovers, NINA FOR FLOWERS sees Kogachi and Jelicich exhibit together for the first time with works made both collaboratively and individually. An exhibition of wall based, tufted paintings alongside finely crafted frames and furniture, NINA FOR FLOWERS presents a romanticised living room scenario.
The exhibition title takes reference from Jelicich’s mother, Nina, a florist who works from her farm in Warkworth alongside her horses, Olympia and Duchess. Referencing images of Nina’s floral arrangements old and new, Kogachi and Jelicich pay homage to Nina and the many other mothers who love their daughters, horses, flowers and furniture.
Similarly to previous bodies of work by Kogachi, the imagery doesn’t stray far from her reality, albeit slightly more idyllic or paradisal. In keeping with this rose-tinted view, Jelicich inserts coloured panes of glass within her highly crafted picture frames, alongside panels of intricate latticework and keepsake drawers.
We look forward to welcoming you to the Gallery for the opening (at which the artists will be present) next Saturday, April 20th, between 11-1pm, all welcome. We will be serving jam and cream donuts by and filter coffee from Kirikiriroa’s own .

Laree Payne Gallery is delighted to present MADE FOR THE HOME, a solo exhibition by Daegan Wells which follows Wells’ inclusion in several group exhibitions with the Gallery over the past three years.
Living and working in rural southland (Ōraka/Colac Bay) or ‘at the bottom of the world’ as Lucinda Bennett once described it Wells works almost exclusively with materials sourced just beyond the threshold of his house. MADE FOR THE HOME presents a series of works constructed from hand-processed wool and muka, all of which have been hand-woven on one of two looms found in Wells’ home-based studio. Revealing an inextricable connection between artist, materials and place, Wells has created works of this place (Aoteaora) to be lived with and upon.
We look forward to welcoming you to the Gallery for the opening (at which the artist will be present) next Thursday evening between 5-7pm, all welcome.
MADE FOR THE HOME will be showing in the Gallery from 20 March - 13 April.

Congratulations to gallery artist Maioha Kara for the new exhibition, In Good Relation, a solo exhibition curated by Ioana Gordon-Smith () for Pātaka Art + Museum ().
“Maioha Kara (Ngāti Korokī Kahukura, Ngāti Tipa, Te Ātihaunui-a-Papārangi, Tūhourangi, Te Whanau a Hinetapora, Kuki Airani) is deeply interested in the interconnectedness of all things. In this exhibition of new and existing works, Kara uses whakapapa as a lens to reveal the connections between people, te taiao, and the very beginnings of creation.
Kara’s work taps into a vast archive of geometries, forms and materials that trace these connections. Referencing her father’s artistic practice, as well as Māori and Kuki Airani art forms (such as whakairo rākau, raranga, tukutuku, kōwhaiwhai and tīvaevae), Kara excavates patterns into timber forms. Her choice of materials further explores the ripples of whakapapa. Native timbers echo our connection to the natural world while coloured glitter embodies the concept of iraira (to shine), the light and the mauri of all things.
Playing with the configurations between pattern, materials and form, Kara creates vast maps of whakapapa that place us within a rich tapestry of connections with each other, nature and the cosmos.”
Moemoeā is viewable now through until June 2nd.
