Did you know? โ Croatia has a ritual called "ลกpica" (shpitza) - which is where locals get dressed to the nines to cafรฉ -hop (the biggest event is in Ban Jelaฤiฤa Square in Zagreb) at brunchtime on Saturdays!
It's a way to get all your errands done in one hit - shopping in the city centre, running errands, and catching up with friends for some gossip over coffee - all while dressed their best. There are usually magazine photographers around to take snaps awarding the best outfits, and it's a buzzing time in the city ๐๐ธ
So if you're ever in Croatia, especially if you're staying in Zagreb, make sure to pack something nice to wear, then go people watching from around 10AM-2PM on Saturdays!
FUN FACT โ
There is no Starbucks in Croatia, and coffee is never taken to go. The coffee culture is very strong here, so coffee is always served in small espresso or cappuccino cups and intended to be enjoyed slowly and pleasurably (just like life!) with the company of friends. Coffee is also often gifted as a small gesture of appreciation when the situation calls for it - visiting a relative, etc., and is all around an important part of Croatian life!
So make sure you take enough euros to enjoy the bountiful cups of coffee you're bound to enjoy ๐๐ถ

What's the best piece of advice you've ever received: Travel Edition ๐
We'll go first: Be BOLD, and don't shy away from something just because you're scared of embarrassment - Ask that stranger to take that photo, try that scary new experience, dance with that street busker, spend a little more than you might originally have planned to have the experience that will be a treasured memory for a lifetime! After all, you only live once, and have already bought that expensive plane ticket anyway, so you might as well make the most of your time in this wonderful new place and live the way YOU want ๐
Croatia on your bucketlist? We're just here to add some motivation with these dreamy summerscapes (and a friendly reminder that as of January 1st 2023, Croatia has switched from the Kuna to the Euro, so you'll be wanting to load up on your EUR for your Croatian holiday!) ๐

Look, no one banks on you getting lost... but it happens! ๐บ
So a good tip for travel safety is to grab a business card from your hotel (or a wristband from your hostel) and to carry a little bit of cash on you, just in case you get a little lost in a new city (or party a bit too hard to remember), so you can ask for directions or catch a cab back to your accommodation.
Shout out to the lovely Tricia from our Colonnades store for this ๐
Some fun facts about Paris:
๐น๐
Hangover cure or not, it's said the "Bloody Mary" was first invented at the Ritz Hotel in Paris for Ernest Hemingway! According to legend, he was given vodka mixed with tomato juice after a request for a drink that didn't smell like alcohol.
๐ถโโ๏ธ If you want to get to the top of the Eiffel Tower, you'll have to climb 1665 steps! (Or, take the elevator instead)
๐ผ Famously home to the Mona Lisa, the Louvre is the largest museum on Earth, with nearly 73,000 square metres of exhibition space and more than 380,000 pieces to see.

Did you know? Japan just released brand new banknotes! ๐ด
Here's everything you need to know:
โ Why is Japan getting new banknotes?
Japan redesigns banknotes every 20 years as an anti-counterfeit measure.
โ Do you still need cash for Japan?
Absolutely! Cash is still king in Japan, so youโll need Japanese Yen in banknotes and coins for things like street food vendors, small restaurants, small businesses, markets, vending machines, festivals and moreโฆ especially so in the more rural areas.
That being said, Japan is slowly getting more and more card-friendly, so if you're planning on hitting up the more famous tourist areas (shopping in Tokyo, anyone?) you can also take a Travel Money Oz Cash Passport prepaid travel card loaded in JPY!
โ Can I still use old Japanese Yen notes?
100% can still use the previous banknotes - they are still accepted and will continue to be accepted according to the Finance Ministry.
In fact, the old Japanese Yen notes might even be handier for the time being, as street vending machines, ticketing machines at restaurants, and some bus fare machines are expected to take a little while longer to be updated to accept the new banknotes.
โ Will Travel Money NZ be getting new JPY banknotes?
Yes we will - but not just yet. The new banknotes are still being pushed into circulation, and so haven't arrived in store yet.
Stay tuned - we'll let you know once they've arrived!
โ What are the new features of the new Japanese Yen design?
The numerals are bigger (and more international-friendly), there are new artworks, new faces (celebrating Japanese achievements in business, women's activism, and science), and a world-first hologram feature!
