Hansen Honey
Honey Bees and honey have always been at the heart of the Hansen family. With more than 100 years of knowledge and experience, quality honey is our specialty.
We love our bees and the great tasting honey they create…and we want to share their delicious gift with you. This Mt Pirongia blend has been collected from the foothills of Mount Pirongia and has a down-to-earth full favour. We know you will love it as much as we do.
So sorry to hear varroa has finally made its way to Australia. It's such a destructive parasite and difficult to control. Thinking of our Australian beekeeping friends and colleagues, and of course the bees.
What do we know about the parasite threatening Australia's bees and agriculture industry? The threat of varroa mite has put a spotlight on agriculture's reliance on bees. Here is everything you need to know about it.

Swarming is how honey bee colonies reproduce. When the hive gets too full, bees start raising new queens and the old queen and some of the workers leave to find a new home. While a swarm of bees can look intimidating, they are generally not aggressive and won't sting unless provoked.
If you find a swarm of honey bees on your property, you can call a beekeeper to come and collect it. There's a list of swarm collectors on the Apiculture New Zealand website here: https://apinz.org.nz/swarm-collection/

Feed the bees …. sunflowers. 🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻
A single sunflower is in fact a collection of tiny flowers, squeezed in tight together. These nectar-filled flowers open over weeks, releasing sweet treats for bees to feed on.

What is a winter bee ❄️🐝? Winter bees are workers that are born in autumn. While their sisters who are born in the summer live for about six weeks, winter bees live for up to six months or longer and help the hive survive the winter. Over the colder months they look after the queen, help keep the hive warm and raise young bees that will look after the hive in the spring time. You can find out more about winter bees here: https://www.honeybeesuite.com/what-are-winter-bees-and-what-do-they-do/

Even in this less than ideal weather, the bees are out working. Bees love camellia flowers - they are such a good source of pollen. See how much she has on her legs.
Get yourself ready to face winter with a good old-fashioned honey and lemon drink. You could add some ginger to spice it up a bit. Great for keeping the bugs away.
I just love this time of year when there is so much to harvest from the garden and orchard. A big thank you to the bees for all your hard work back in spring.
