Nettie Riley Kindergarten
This kindergarten located on Witako Street in central Lower Hutt offers an all-day (7.30am to 5pm), all year service for 2-5 year olds.
This is a great option for families who want the kindergarten teaching philosophy and require a longer day service. The Kindergarten is on the ground level of the newly built Hutt Valley Heath Hub with a spacious outdoor area that wraps around the building. This provides a variety of spaces for tamariki to explore, learn and play. Including a sandpit, gardens, climbing equipment, swings and more.
Pie Fundraiser at Nettie Riley Kindergarten
This month we will be having a Centa Bakery pie fundraiser. Our last pie fundraiser was such a hit earlier this year, so we have decided to do it again! These pies are delicious, and we wanted to share this with our wider community.
There are 13 flavours to choose from and the cost is $13 per pie. Please contact Anita or Christina on 04 567 0142 if you are interested in placing an order.
Orders and money are due by August 21st.
Pies will be ready for pick up from the Kindergarten on the 5th September.
During the lead up to celebrating Matariki we have enjoyed tending to our māra kai, baking and cooking, and sharing an enjoyable evening with our whānau here at Nettie Riley Kindergarten. We continue to learn and explore the whetū of Matariki, what they represent and link to within te taiao (the natural world); provoking wonderful conversations about whetū, marama, and their stories. How have you celebrated Matariki in your whānau?
On Friday, our Pōhutukawa tamariki enjoyed taking their mindfulness practice outside, getting to use our new deck! The fresh air added to our calm atmosphere for mindfulness leaving us all feeling refreshed and ready to re-engage in learning.

Last week ngā tamariki had noticed that the sunflowers in our garden had lost all of the petals and didn't look pretty anymore. Tasha cut the flower head off and in morning we picked all the seeds out. Carolyn shared that these seeds could be planted in Raumati/Summer and we would be able to grow new sunflowers.
We looked carefully at the seeds and noticed they were stripy! We felt them and squeezed them, some popped out of their shell! Carolyn said that the seed has a hard shell to protect it, but once we plant them again a little shoot will burst through the shell and into Papatuanuku and grow big and tall again for us to enjoy
To our HCK Whānau, please see letter below from our General Managers in regards to the COVID-19 Protection Framework - Red Setting
We have been enjoying wonderful summer days at kindergarten and have had the sprinkler out cooling us down. Ngā tamariki have loved the cool down!
Enjoy your long weekend and we will see you on Tuesday.
Kia Ora e te Whānau
We have had a wonderful warm start to the year with lots of exploring and reconnecting with friends. Kaiako spent time foraging over the break and adding to our collection of loose parts. It has been exciting to see what ngā tamariki have been creating and exploring with these. Loose parts play helps tamariki develop creative and critical thinking skills by encouraging them to use their imagination and experiment with new ideas freely.
Children helping with age appropriate chores is positive developmentally too!
Kia ora e te whānau,
Last week we celebrated with not 1 but 2 Happy Holiday parties. We had lots of tired tamariki and kaiako after the last party on Friday but we also had so much fun (which is what it's all about).
We also want to say a huge ngā mihi to all our amazing whānau. We have been inundated with gifts and Kai and we feel very spoilt by you all ❤. Thank you, thank you, thank you 🙂.
Reminder that today 21st December is the last day of Kindergarten for 2021. We reopen in the new year on the 5th January.
Ngā mihi o te Kirihimete me te Tau Hau!
Kia ora e te whānau,
Today we drew the Christmas raffle. Congratulations to the winners. If you have won a prize you will have been contacted by Hannah. We have raised over $800 which is amazing. Winners in the picture below 🙂.
We would like to say a massive ngā mihi (thank you) to everyone who donated things for our hampers and a special thank you to the following people:
Noa's whānau for the donation of 2 x 1 hour massages
Olive's whānau for the donation of the Seashore Cabaret voucher
Nora and Fonz's whānau for the donation of the Hills Hats voucher
We are incredibly humbled by the support we have received and thank you again.
We will be using the funds raised to purchase resources for the Kindergarten in the new year.
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas at kindergarten! Tamariki have been having lots of creative fun decorating trees with loose parts, wrapping presents and creating amazing artwork! We are getting excited for our dress up day next Tuesday! Roll on Christmas!
Our gardens have been growing so well over the past month. Tamariki have been very interested in the growth of the plants both inside and outside. They have been helping to water the sunflowers and helping Christine care for all the indoor plants with her special banana water!
Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) is on next week. Will you be joining us?
We invite Hutt City Kindergarten parents and whānau to attend our Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 26th October at 7pm. Let your Head Teacher know if you would like to attend.
Every kindergarten with at least two parents in attendance

Venue is The Dowse Art Museum, 45 Laings Road, Lower Hutt
See you there!
We have all been working together to get our garden ready for ngā tamariki to have the opportunity to grow some sunflowers and vegetables. Claire and ngā tamariki have made up our worm farm and have been looking after the worms and the compost, two ways we recycle and help our garden! We planted some sunflower seeds into egg shells and have been putting these into our flower garden as they sprout, we are looking forward to lots of bright colour in our summer garden!
