Rhubarb is great in recipes such as jam, crumbles and pies. It is an easy plant to grow, has a few enemies, is remarkably hardy and is great for those forgetful gardeners. Autumn through to summer is the best time to plant Rhubarb, so start now!
Tips on how to grow Rhubarb:
🥬Likes plenty of moisture and fertiliser. Find a sunny spot and dig in lots of organic matter such as well matured compost and add some blood and bone.
🥬Make sure to have adequate drainage in the soil as Rhubarb will rot at the base if it is constantly damp.
🥬Plant the roots under the soil but only to the point where the leaves emerge at ground level. They need space to grow as their foliage is dense and large. You will also need to consider other plants in your garden as the foliage can overshadow and shade other plants.
🥬Continue feeding right through the growing season which depending on your region will be from Spring to Summer. Apply liquid fertiliser every couple of weeks.

How cute is this baby tomato growing in one of our stores 🍅
If you didn't know already chlorophyll is a green pigment present in all plants, it is crucial for a plant's development. It absorbs sunlight and helps photosynthesis. Tomato seeds are green because they contain chlorophyll, once they mature and grow the chlorophyll breaks down and lycopene develops which is responsible for the ripe tomato color.
This little tomato still has a while to go but before you know it, it will be ready to harvest 🥰

Did you know you can grow a new potato from an existing one? 😮🥔
Well yes that is correct and kind of fascinating isn't it. Potatoes are easy to grow so here is a few important tips:
🥔Seed potatoes need to sprout before they can be planted which can take 4-6 weeks. Lay the seed potatoes out on a seed tray or egg carton in a sunny spot. When the shoots are 3-4cm long, they are ready to plant!
🥔Plant seed potatoes in mid-September, ready for harvest on Christmas day
🥔Potatoes are gross feeders so we recommend digging in Tui Potato Food
🥔Plant seed potatoes in furrows (rows of small trenches) about 15cm deep and 80cm apart in the garden
🥔To grow in containers place 10cm of garden mix in the bottom and lay about 5 sprouted seed potatoes on top with the sprouts pointing up

On the Islands water is in limited supply so extra thought is required…. ensuring you have the right plant for the place is crucial.
We had the exciting task of helping with some planting selections for a property. We chose Carissa for its resilience to coastal conditions and ability to cope with minimal water. With its crisp white flowers, the lime edged Bougainvillea will bring a freshness to the hot days and the long evenings. We also loved seeing the Olives, some of which were over 900 years old! 🇬🇷
