Today, we’re celebrating an amazing dad who’s making a real difference—meet Damin Clavijo Rangel from our fair trade partner ANEI. Damin joined the co-op hoping to get a fair price for his coffee and improve his skills, and that’s exactly what he’s done!
Thanks to his training, Damin now picks his coffee at just the right time and has built a solar dryer to make it even better. With the extra income, he’s made some great changes at home. Marlenis, his wife, used to cook over an open fire, which was smoky and uncomfortable. Now, they have a new oven with a chimney, making their kitchen safer and cooler.
Damin’s story isn’t just about coffee; it’s about building a community. He works alongside indigenous farmers and Spanish-descended campesinos in ANEI, and together, they’re learning and growing in respect and cooperation. As Alcira Izquierdo, an indigenous Arhuaco member of ANEI, says, "In our community, the better we get to know each other, the more we respect each other too."
Here’s to Damin and all the father figures who work tirelessly to provide for their families and build better futures through fair trade. 💪💚
Happy Father’s Day! 🎉
📷 Damin is photographed with his family: Marlenis Pochis Rangel, his wife, and their two children Yoelis (10 yrs) and Victor (4 yrs). A third child, Yeleinis, was away studying in Valledupar.
He poroporoaki aroha mō te rangatira nui | A Tribute to a Great Leader
Today, with heavy hearts, we acknowledge the passing of Kiingi Tūheitia Pōtatau Te Wherowhero VII, a respected leader and a beacon of strength and unity for Aotearoa. His guidance and wisdom have touched many lives, leaving a legacy of manaakitanga, leadership, and aroha for our nation.
As we reflect on his journey, we honour the values he stood for—whakawhanaungatanga (connection), kaitiakitanga (guardianship), and kotahitanga (unity). Our thoughts are with his whānau, the Kiingitanga, and all those who mourn his loss.

📷 Meet Kulsum Khatun, a skilled artisan and dedicated mom of two. 🌟 Kulsum learned to sew at BSRM FTC, part of CORR – The Jute Works, and has been working there since 2015.
“Working here has changed my life. I love having the opportunity to earn a living and provide for my family. I want my daughter to become a doctor, just like her father, the village doctor, and we’ve saved a bit for her education,” says Kulsum.
Located near the India-Bangladesh border, this centre is vital in a region at high risk for human trafficking. Along with entrepreneurial skills, women receive training and awareness on the dangers of crossing the border.
Since 2015, over 200 women have been trained in traditional crafts like hand embroidery (Kantha), batik, and sewing. This training has empowered them to start small businesses from home, making a positive impact on the community.
🌿 Celebrating International Day of World's Indigenous Peoples with ANEI 🌿
Today, we honour the incredible work of our fair trade partner, ANEI, based in Colombia. As a community-based cooperative, ANEI's mission goes beyond producing exceptional coffee. They are committed to preserving the rich cultural heritage of their indigenous peoples (Arhuaco, Wiwa, and Kogui).
Indigenous peoples have a deep connection to the land, often spanning generations, and possess invaluable knowledge about sustainable resource management. 🌎
📷 Meet Alva Izquiredo, a passionate coffee farmer from the Jewrwa region in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains. Since joining ANEI’s women’s program in 2019, Alva has become a leader, inspiring her community and enhancing her livelihood. Through fair trade, Alva earns 25% more for her organic coffee compared to local market prices, allowing her to improve her home, farm, and provide education for her children.
ANEI's support extends beyond coffee production. Their food security program provides reliable, affordable and more nutritious food options, while the women's group offers training and a strong support network. As Alva says, "You can see the benefits we receive from ANEI in everything we do here... ANEI’s value is incalculable – it benefits every area of our lives."
On this special day, we celebrate ANEI's dedication to sustainability, cultural preservation, and the empowerment of Indigenous communities. 🌱
🌿 Meet Adelio Ferreira: Champion of Sustainable Sugar Cane 🌱
Adelio Ferreira, an environmental engineer and technical agronomy assistant with our fair trade partners at Manduvira, is making a difference in organic golden sugar production. Starting as an intern in high school, Manduvira supported Adelio through university, offering flexible work and study conditions. Today, he produces sugar cane on his own land as a proud member of the co-op.
"The main benefits I receive through Manduvira include access to tractors and organic compost, which boost my efficiency and production volumes," says Adelio.
Manduvira's technical team works tirelessly to help farmers like Adelio thrive. From soil analysis and compost distribution to innovative projects like drone-delivered fertilisers and a pilot irrigation project, Manduvira is committed to sustainable and efficient farming.
Manduvira is not just growing and processing sugar— they're cultivating a community of empowered, environmentally-conscious farmers. 🌟

If you're in Whangarei, stop by Trade Aid and take home a piece of fair trade history. Plus, enjoy up to 70% off while you can!

Thank you to our wonderful Whangarei team for your dedication to the fair trade movement. 💖
A reminder for all of us - people have power, we can create real and meaningful change.
No one should benefit from slavery. Not brands and not consumers. Yet, they do.
New Zealand families are estimated to spend an average of $77 a week on products tainted with slavery.*
We're disappointed by the NZ government's decision to disband the Modern Slavery Legislation Advisory Group. This is a step backward in our fight against modern slavery and exploitation in global supply chains.
Trade Aid has been a relentless advocate for ethical trade for decades. From presenting petitions to Parliament in 1996 and 2007 to rallying 37,000+ signatures with World Vision in 2021, our commitment to eradicating slavery has never wavered.
We call on the government to reconsider this decision. The fight against modern slavery requires unwavering dedication and we seek to collaborate with other like-minded people and organisations to achieve these ends.
So, watch this space…

We were touched by a heartfelt email from Alison, a long-time Trade Aid supporter. ♥️
With our Henderson and Whangarei stores closing this month, we want to celebrate the amazing memories our community has shared with us over the years. Here's a snippet of Alison's story:
"Just wanted to drop a little email to share a memory about Trade Aid, and it is a special memory, even more so now that the retail stores are closing.
When I was 13-14 years old, so this is going back to 1994, I had some pocket money that I would use to buy small Christmas presents for my family. Every year, I would go to Trade Aid in Takapuna, now this is back in the day when the Trade Aid store was up near the intersection with Lake Rd. That store always had cool, ethnic inspired music playing. There was fresh incense burning on the counter, and shelves and shelves stocked with all kinds of exotic treasures from all over the world - polished metal bowls, hand woven rugs, little worry dolls (I bought them!), ceramic nativity scenes from South America. I just loved it, and my little bit of pocket money went a long way in that store. My first purchase was a jute woven coaster for my Mum, and the lady in the store told me it came from Bangladesh. I had to go home that night and look up the country! But I felt oh so good on the inside knowing that my Christmas shopping was helping someone else, somewhere on the other side of the world.
Over the years, I kept going back all through my teens, and 20s and 30s to do my shopping - I always would buy up gifts for family. My 77-year old Mum still has the woven jute coaster on her bedside table I bought back in 1994 and she uses it every night to rest her cuppa tea.
When I bought my home, one of the first purchases for the house was a pair of beautiful noodle bowls with chopstick rest holes, and I still love them.
I have a pair of reindeer which were crafted from dried vines, and they stand pride of place in my hallway every year at Christmas. My tree has a Trade Aid ornament from nearly every year since, yes, 1994.
I'm so sad to hear that Trade Aid is closing their stores, I will miss going to see what's new, and what is still there from my youth. But I'm so grateful that you existed, because you helped me to open my mind and understand there is a much bigger world out there beyond my space in Auckland. I was inspired to travel from visiting your stores and seeing all these beautiful hand made things from far away lands.
Thank you for being such a positive influence to my young teenage mind all those years ago.
All the very best to you,
Alison"
As we bid farewell to our Henderson and Whangarei stores, we'd love to hear your cherished memories too! Share your Trade Aid stories in the comments or tag us in your posts. Let's celebrate the impact of fair trade and the beautiful connections we've made over the years. ❤️

Tomorrow is our last day in our beautiful shop at The Mount. After more than 30 years in Tauranga central, Trade Aid moved to The Mount nearly a decade ago. Family members were roped in to becoming volunteers, volunteers became family, customers became friends and many of them became volunteers. Our shop turned into one of those wonderful places where people came to buy that special gift, that everyday chocolate bar, the coffee for the office and of course, that basket that we all need for laundry, firewood, shoes, toys, plants.... A wander around our shop always made everyone feel good, the smells, the music, the lovely feel of everything and the atmosphere all made for a very special environment. So please, if you are in the neighbourhood, pop in, come and say hi and goodbye. We still have some chocolate on the counter for you to try, we still have some lovely products in the shop and who knows, you might buy one of the last bells, macrame hanger or cushion covers.
Thank you for making a difference in the lives of thousands of producers and their families by shopping with us for all these years. Thank you for being a part of our Trade Aid family.
Warmest regards from us all at Trade Aid Mt Maunganui...
31 days of trading to go...
Thank you for all the support you have been showing our staff and volunteers. Here's some suggestions about how you can help us as we face the eventual closing of our shop, probably by the end of June.
Be kind, and keep the faith! Fair trade is still something to check for with anything you buy.
Come and buy lots at our 40% off all craft sale. All the craft people have already been properly paid - that's the standard fair trade model. You'll be helping us restructure the business to stay in business - our coffee and cocoa wholesale and retail are still going well, to the benefit of thousands of growers and their communities. We will also keep selling craft as much as we can online and via other NZ retailers.
Buy chocolate and other goodies - it is not discounted, but our factory will be closing by June, so get it before it's gone. Very very sad we know.
Keep checking out what's in store - we will have lots more craft arriving for several months yet.
Finally, know how grateful Tradeaid, including our thousands of suppliers - farmers, crafts-people and their communities - are for all your support over the last 50 years. Please help us transition to Tradeaid 2.
Our big sale starts today....
40% off all artisan made craft products.
(Food and beverages excluded from the sale)
Hope to see you soon and don't forget, we have delicious chocolate for you to taste while you are looking for your favourite products.
Some very sad news - Trade Aid has decided to progressively close all our retail shops, most by the end of June. The Mount Maunganui shop will still be with you for a while yet, but all our retail shops have been badly affected by the general downturn in retail spending. Trade Aid coffee is still an important and viable business and will continue, along with some wholesale and online craft sales.
This is a very sad time for so many people, especially our hugely dedicated staff and fantastic volunteers. We also feel for our producer partners who have been finding it harder to market their wonderful products. We are proud to have supported thousands of people and communities to improve their lives over the last 50 years, and will continue the work for more justice in international trading. The model and means have to evolve, but the cause and commitment remain.
Kia ora koutou,
With Cyclone Gabrielle making its way across the North Island, we have made the decision to temporarily close our store.
We look forward to seeing you when the severe weather has passed.
Stay safe and dry,
Noho ora mai ❤️
Our lovely customer Rachel Hatch is the lucky recipient of our Eco Giftbasket
At our Trade Aid store in Mt Maunganui we have a wonderful group of dedicated volunteers. They work their regular shifts, generously giving their time to Trade Aid. The volunteers provide the customers with great service and care and they are always happy to share their knowledge about Trade Aid and fair trade with our customers. We so appreciate our volunteers and we are grateful for all they do for Trade Aid. So to all our volunteers.... Margaret, Dale, Rebecca, Lorraine G, Jo, Ron, Caleb, Debbie, Diane R, Diane M, Ngaire, Gretchen, Kanta, Pam, Melanie, Te Amorangi, Harry, Lorraine D, Jenny, Lyle, Veronica, Kathy, Jill, Tuo, Julie, Christine, Eva, Anne, Jess, Rosie and Kasey....
thank you, thank you, thank you for your time, commitment and dedication. You make such a difference in so many lives.
Chakra incense, Thai pillow and sunshine. Perfect for a relaxing day, all available in store (except for the sunshine)
A great day here in The Bay, perfect to show our rings, made with natural stones, hanging on a gorgeous jewelery tree and a beautiful wooden cat ring holder
A reminder that your everyday purchases can be the easiest way to make a difference. ♥️
"Buy The Change You Want To See" is an insightful book about how we can transform lives by voting with our dollars. Jane Mosbacher Morris, founder of has devoted her career to creating economic opportunities for vulnerable communities around the world, and in this book, she shares her passion and insights on how we, as consumers, can create positive change too.
Featuring inspiring stories about how victims of modern slavery and labour exploitation have been empowered by economic opportunity, this book offers practical tips on how we can support these communities through our purchases. A highly recommended read for conscious consumers!
A huge selection of potplant holders in store now. From Macrame to Terracotta, delicate stoneware and gorgeous baskets...
Definitely something for everyone!
Did you know?
A cocoa pod is a fruit with a thick leathery rind filled with a sweet pulp that tastes like lemonade. The fruit consists of 30-50 large seeds. Cocoa seeds go through a number of processes before they can be used as the key chocolate ingredient.
The only thing you have to do to have some delicious, organic, fair trade chocolate is: come to our shop in Mt Maunganui. We have such a great selection of flavours, the process of choosing the one you like could be a difficult one....
What does Trade Aid do (besides having great shops with beautiful artisan made products, delicious chocolate and THE best coffee)?

Creating fairness in trade
Trade Aid is a social enterprise creating fairness in trade. We work with small food and craft producers around the world, and we support and educate kiwi consumers to join with us in creating a world where trade is fair for all. Founded right here in New Zealand in 1973.
Kiwis are a great bunch. We know what it’s like to be small on the world stage and it doesn’t stop us. We stand up for what is right and lead the world when it matters. It was no accident that we were the first country to give women the vote or to introduce the 8-hour working day. We also know what it’s like to be an island alone, so we developed a unique culture and embraced creativity – who else could’ve invented snifters and pineapple lumps!
So when Christchurch couple Vi and Richard Cottrell knew there was a way they could help, they gathered their friends, cleared out their garage in preparation for artisan handcraft shipments from around the world, and started Trade Aid as a social enterprise in 1973, before anyone knew what a social enterprise* was!
To this day, no-one owns Trade Aid, or maybe everyone owns Trade Aid – that is to say all the kiwis who have mucked in over the years to keep the vision alive – New Zealanders working together to achieve equity for all.
