We are thrilled that our current Chair Paula Hansen has been named as a finalist at the Sports Hawkes Bay Forsyth Barr 2021 Sports Awards for Sportsground.co.nz Administrator of the Year.
Paula has been on the Board of HBU since 2013 and Chair for the past six years. During this time she has been hugely instrumental in ensuring that the club maintained its place as a National League entity, despite the many challenges along the way. The cost of participating in this competition was not insignificant and most, if not all, of the other clubs involved had paid staff to help manage things like player recruitment, travel arrangements, sponsorship and funding procurement, and match day management. HBU relied heavily on a small volunteer base, extremely well led by Paula, to manage all of these aspects of the operation. Paula spent countless hours in a fully voluntary capacity ensuring that the club continued to prosper. Her drive, passion and dedication to the club is unparalleled and it would not be exaggerating to suggest that the club, and with it the pathway to the top domestic level of football for our local men players, would have ceased to exist some time ago without her massive contribution. Alongside her role as HBU Chair, Paula was voted as the Chair of the National League Club's Committee which represented the Chairs of all ten National League entities in the ISPS Handa Men's Premiership. This group were a voting member of New Zealand Football and Paula has become a hugely respected leader amongst this group and is recognised as an influential figure in the game by NZ Football and the seven Federations across the country. Paula's contribution now, and her undoubted future as a leader in the game, was recognised in late 2019 when she was invited as the sole New Zealander to attend a Women's Leadership Forum at FIFA headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland. In addition to her role as HBU Chair, Paula is also on the Board of Central Football and has been so for the past five years. Again, this is a voluntary role and involves considerable time away from family to meet meeting and associated Board related commitments. Paula has been a strong advocate around the Central Football Board table for increased opportunities for women in sport, not just football, and has played a huge part in the Diversity work that the organisation has undertaken over the past 18 months or so. Added to all of this, Paula continues to be a Committee Member of her local club, Taradale Association Football Club, is a Life Member of this club and continues to play for the clubs social ladies side each Sunday.
We are incredibly proud of you Paula and win or lose we want to acknowledge and celebrate your phenomenal contribution to our club!

"Gotta feel for Hawke’s Bay United, this was their last hurrah and after the final whistle there was a funeral atmosphere amongst their fans and players alike. There’s so much to be proud of from what they achieved over the last decade and a half though – remember there was a time there when HBU were regular playoff candidates. Even just this season, to come back from such a horrid start to be as competitive as they were was no mean feat. More on that in their season debrief down the line. Kaeden Atkins had an excellent game (even if he was out of position for the winner). Bill Robertson led by example as he has all season. Already mentioned Jorge Akers, while Karan Mandair is never not impressive. It’s the end of an era for the franchise but none of these players are about to fade away any time soon."
As always, thanks to The Niche Cache for their coverage of the ISPS Handa Premiership, by far the most comprehensive you would find!
