Simplicity Funerals, Nelson
Simplicity Funerals and it's staff offer professional care of your loved ones at your time of need. Simply Respectful. Simply Affordable.
Simple really… the experienced, caring staff at Simplicity Funerals Nelson believe things should be simple for you at what can be a difficult time. Traditional or contemporary… a funeral should be affordable and it should be respectful.
It can be hard to know how to respond when someone you care about is grieving. There is no easy “fix” for grief, and the process cannot be sped up – it will take as long as it takes. If you’re supporting someone through grief, just take things at their pace.
As a supporting person, starting a conversation can feel like having a mountain to climb, but remember that however you phrase it, your opening sentence is not going to be the part they remember. The fact that you were concerned enough to ask, and to be there for them is what will mean the most to them.
For ideas about the Do’s and Don’ts of communicating with a grieving person, download our self-help factsheet here: https://nelson.simplicity.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Stuck-for-Words-Factsheet.pdf
And remember, it’s your support and caring presence that will help them cope with the pain and sadness they feel. Just being there can mean the world to them.
Flower of the month - Kōwhai
The native Kōwhai Tree is famous for its brilliant yellow flowers which appear in late winter and continue to flower through spring.
Unofficially known as New Zealand's national flower, there are eight native species of Kōwhai. Their vibrant yellow coloured flowers attract native birds and bees to their nectar rich flowers.
In some areas, Māori take the flowering of the Kōwhai tree as a sign it is time to plant kūmara.
Don’t stop checking in on those who are grieving…
Sometimes, those who have lost someone act like everything is fine, and from the outside they probably even look fine. They can seem to move through life doing the everyday, ordinary stuff we’re all expected to do, but underneath, they are often not fine.
When you check in, it says “I am thinking about you, and I care. You aren’t alone.” And that means everything.
Pre-planning your funeral is always a good idea. Your family will know exactly what your wishes are, and will be saved from having to make difficult decisions on one of the hardest days of their lives.
Instead, they can be together and grieve their loss. With a funeral plan in place, they can put your wishes in motion, confident that you will be honored in the way you wanted, removing so much stress and strain off your family.
Get in touch and we can either send you a funeral pre-arrangement pack, or arrange to meet with you to complete it.

Save this post as a gentle reminder for when you need it. 💙
Mid-Winter Solstice - Fri, 21 Jun 2024, 8:50 am
As winter is starting in New Zealand, the winter solstice marks the date when the Earth’s axis is furthest away from the sun, and we have the longest night of the year, when the sun is at its most northern point in the sky.
Although temperatures continue to get colder, the days gradually grow longer as we head towards spring, but we won't notice the earlier mornings for a couple of weeks because of the tilt of the Earth.
Whether reaching out to trusted family and friends or seeking guidance from a therapist, opening up to supportive networks can be a courageous step toward healing. 💙
By sharing the burden of grief with others who understand and empathise, you can find comfort knowing you are not alone on your grief journey.
Nelson Tasman is a fantastic place to live, and we would like to send a great big THANK YOU to all those who volunteer their time and energy in our beautiful region. 💙
We are so grateful for the time you dedicate and the support you have given, as you make a huge difference to people in our region.
Thank you for your boundless enthusiasm and kindness. You are deeply appreciated.
We know it doesn’t have to cost the earth to mean the world. Our services mean you can say goodbye on your terms, because Simplicity means living (and dying) within your means.
We always provide the most respectful and affordable option that suits your needs.

Grief becomes a part of your story, and as you navigate your journey, you find ways to coexist with it. It's not about erasing the pain but learning to carry it as a testament to the love and memories that continue to shape your life. 💙 💙
This is a commonly asked question. The cost of a funeral can vary depending on several factors, including the services selected, the location, and any additional preferences or requirements.
We understand that cost is an important consideration during this difficult time. That's why we recommend completing our funeral pre-planning kit to make your wishes known, and to get an idea of what it will cost to carry out those wishes.

Men’s Health Week - blog post by Rob McConnachie
So how’s this for timing then, from the 1News website…
King Charles III returns to public duties with cancer charity trip
“… Unlike most royals before him, Charles chose to publicly disclose details about his health when he first underwent treatment for an enlarged prostate and later when he was diagnosed with cancer. The decision raised awareness of these issues.
The National Health Service in England said the number of people seeking advice about prostate problems increased 11-fold in the weeks after Charles’ announced he was undergoing treatment.”
This must have been earthshattering for conservative, stiff upper lip Britons who follow the social norms that dictate that men show neither vulnerability, weakness nor emotions. They don’t admit to needing help or support, and they remain in control of everything. And they certainly don’t discuss private matters in public. Previous kings would have turned in their graves. Mind you, they were probably in their graves early because of those cultural “norms”.
This scandal in Great Britain is very similar to what men in New Zealand experienced when Sir John Kirwan “came out” regarding his mental health struggles. But it is this kind of “coming out” that will stop New Zealand men from going to their graves early.
There are many reasons that men struggle to deal with their health issues, whether these be mental, emotional or physical. As already mentioned, social and cultural norms set expectations of strong, masculine behaviour; men are supposed to be tough, self-sufficient, able to cope with their own problems while fixing the problems of others; they work hard, and focus on their careers; and they do all this on their own.

How our Thoughts Govern what we feel
We have between 5,000 and 60,000 thoughts every day. Left unguarded, thoughts can create a myriad of mental, emotional and physical conditions.
Left unguarded, our thoughts can make it very difficult to move forward in life, especially after experiencing a significant loss. It is therefore beneficial to understand how thoughts work, how thoughts impact on our health and wellbeing on a daily basis.
So, how do you control your thinking – especially at a time of great emotional hardship? For tips on controlling your thoughts, download our self-care factsheet here:

A funeral service is an important part in the very personal journey of grief we all travel on the death of someone we love. It honours and celebrates your loved one’s life, it gives family and friends the opportunity to share their memories, their thoughts and their grief together.
It gives them the time to acknowledge the life of, and say farewell to someone who has touched their lives in so many ways.

What is the role of the celebrant at a funeral or memorial? 🎤 📝 🎵
A celebrant can be someone you and your family know or a religious person of significance to the person that has passed. The celebrant is qualified to officiate funeral services and can be involved in all or a few stages of the service - it's completely up to you.
Alongside conducting the funeral, you may like to include your celebrant in planning the order of service, choosing music, poems and hymns and putting together the eulogy so you make the day meaningful and heartfelt throughout.
If you do not have your own minister and would still like to have a religious service we can arrange this for you, similarly, if you wish to have a non-religious service we can organise a celebrant who will help you plan the service of your choice - there are some wonderful celebrants throughout Nelson/Tasman!💕
We are always available to chat this through with you. Call ☎️ 03 539 0066 or pop by to see us at our Nelson office on Haven Road.

Introducing Reterniti Stones...Hold Your Loved One Close – After they’ve gone.
Reterniti is a New Zealand innovation, solving the age-old question of what to do with one’s ashes after cremation.
Reterniti convert your loved one’s ashes into a tasteful, discrete stone. A Reterniti stone is tactile and is intended to be held close unlike an urn or a box. Keep them nearby or place them in their favourite spot.
