Wall To Wall Art, Nelson, New Zealand
A fantastic little gallery in central Nelson run by a collective of 13 artists & local guest artists.
A collective of Nelson artists which started in January 2009.
Guest artist Ana Burne is a self-taught multi-disciplinary artist from Tasman who enjoys combining portraits with botanicals.
“I love all mediums of painting but I mostly paint with watercolour and acrylic inks on paper. More recently I have been dabbling in gelli plate and lino printing. I've also found great joy in sourcing, restoring and repurposing picture frames hand-picked for my artwork.
“My work is often botanical inspired due to my love of indoor plants (I've lost count how many plants I have, over 150 in my indoor jungle!) and my appreciation of New Zealand native fauna. My paintings reflect the idea that we tend to plants and help them thrive and in turn they nurture our wellbeing and help us grow.”
Ana is exhibiting with us until 31 July.
Wall To Wall Art is looking for a local artist to join the team!
This is the perfect opportunity to be a part of a vibrant collective gallery in the heart of Nelson.
Membership fees, gallery duties and commission on sales apply.
If you are interested and would like more information and an application form, please email [email protected] or call 022 378 6099. The applications close on Friday, 31st August 2024.
Our Feature Artist this month is Leigh Dougherty with an exhibition titled 'Deja Vu'.
For a number of years Leigh has been focusing on abstracted landscapes recognisable by their angular mountains gilded with gold and surrounded by soft clouds. For this exhibition, however, she has decided to revisit her impressionist landscapes.
Leigh says: "Once I started down this painting journey again, I wondered why I had stepped away from it for so long as it is a far more relaxing way of creating. As artists we don't often get the chance to just play in our studios and develop new ideas or even revisit old ones. So it has been a joy to come back to this more loose and expressive way of painting. My abstracted works which I still love to paint, are very structured and have so much tension in them, whereas these pieces speak of quiet, gentle moments."
Leigh's exhibition is at Wall to Wall until 13 August.
We are delighted to welcome mosaic artist Esther Baumann back as a guest artist.
Esther says: "The thing that really hooked me about mosaics is the way each tile or element is its own little light well, like the facets on a jewel. Vibrant and reflective on a gray day, bright and shining on a sunny day, a small galaxy of reflections at night, inviting viewers to notice the intricacies and discover new aspects with each glance.
“I love bringing out the ever-changing interplay of colour, texture and ambient light, carefully shaping and arranging every element to build complex layers of gradients and patterns, while also striving for fine craftsmanship - the details are as important as the whole!
“Mosaic art allows me to share my joy and wonder for the detail and variety that make up our world, and to show how beauty can exist from many angles.””
Two of our artists, Virginia Watson Art and Peter Gibbs Pottery, are exhibiting in the Seven Exhibition at the McKee Gallery at the Suter Art Gallery. The exhibition welcomes seven new members to the Nelson Suter Art Society and features their work.
The exhibition opens today, 8th July, and the opening is on Wed 10 July from 5.30pm - 7pm. All welcome!

June news from Wall to Wall Heating up in the cold
Wall to Wall will be OPEN as usual from 10am - 4pm on the King's Birthday, Monday 3 June.
Everyone is invited to the opening of 'Pigments, Pots and Pearls' on Wed 29 May from 5.30 - 7pm at the Nelson Suter Art Society's McKee Gallery.
This joint exhibition by members of the Nelson Suter Art Society includes our very own Leigh Dougherty. Attached are some of the artwork she's exhibiting. The exhibition runs until 16 June.
Collective member Virginia Watson Art has "spread her wings" this month onto one of the guest walls to exhibit a range of birds which inhabit Nelson's Waimea Inlet, which she paints with a knife.
Virginia's paintings allude to the fragility of coastal habitats, but they're fun and colourful and full of quirky birdy behaviours.
The gallery is sadly saying farewell to award-winning pastel artist Nicola Reif.
Nicola and her husband are heading to Western Australia to take up a new job opportunity and she’ll be leaving the gallery on June 11.
She has been with the group since 2018, when it was upstairs in Trafalgar St as Art@203.
“It is with mixed feelings and a heavy heart that I am handing in my resignation as a gallery member. I have loved my time at the gallery and working alongside such supportive artists has been the best. I have learnt so much and it has been a great way to break into the art world.”
Nicola is offering a 20 percent reduction in the prices of her originals for the next month, so now is a great opportunity to secure one of her amazing artworks.

Our Feature Artist this month is Barry Driver with an exhibition titled "Heart Songs". These are the largest works that Barry has produced to date, and make quite an impact!
Barry said: “The title Heart Songs alluded to my gradual realisation that I typically produce my best work when I’m not actually trying - when I’ve managed to dumb-down my judging/careful mind and left my heart with the freedom simply to play."
Barry's work is on the Feature Wall until 11 June. .driver
