Next up was “Hikitia te Hā yoga” led by Matt, our Hamilton clinic team leader. The team did so well trying something new in the spirit of Matariki (which is also the name of our whare).

Members of the Te Matau-a-Māui team attended the Whānau Marama Light Show on late last month. This was a sensory spectacle and taught us about the local voyagers to the region. We all absolutely loved it!

The medial collateral ligament (MCL) is a thickened band-like structure on the inside of the knee that attaches to the bottom of the thigh bone (femur) and crosses the knee joint where it attaches to the top of the shin bone (tibia). It is one of the four main ligaments responsible for maintaining the stability of the knee joint and functions to resist force applied from the outer surface.
An injury to the MCL can be caused by:
▪️ A sudden force to the outside of the knee while it is slightly bent e.g. a heavy tackle in rugby
▪️ A twisting force to the knee while the knee is slightly bent
Due to the varying grades of MCL injury, it is very important to get comprehensive assessment and treatment from a physiotherapist. Isolated mild-moderate MCL injuries are managed conservatively with physiotherapy and may take 4-6 weeks to return to full function. For more severe MCL injuries, return to higher-level activity may take 10-12 weeks of rehabilitation.
In rare cases, surgical intervention may be required when the injury involves multiple ligaments/structures within the knee joint. After surgery, physiotherapy management similar to low-grade MCL injuries is essential for rehabilitation. Your physiotherapist will guide you in a graduated return to play program once the injury has healed correctly.

Every July is Mindfulness Month, an initiative to encourage small new daily habits that have a big impact on your wellbeing and also to raise funds to help the Mental Health Foundation of NZ uplift the mental health and wellbeing of our rangatahi/young people.
This year they have four weekly challenges to take on and Week 1 is all about journalling. That is, putting pen to paper to help process your thoughts and emotions. Have you tried journalling before?
Why: The daily task of writing, drawing or noting your thoughts, emotions or things you're grateful for is proven to improve mental wellbeing, help you process difficult life events and increase self-awareness and understanding.
How: Use any journal you like, or your Month Done book with daily prompts. You can write, draw, doodle or make a list. Do whatever works for you.

Today June 28, 2024 marks Matariki, a very special day in our calendar - Maori New Year in Aoteroa, New Zealand.
The theme this year is Matariki heri kai and comes from the Māori proverb ‘Matariki whetū heri kai’ meaning ‘Matariki, the bringer of food’.
A call to return to your whānau and your people, wherever and whoever that might be. Celebrate, eat and be with one another. Reconnect with where you are from - the mountains, rivers, ocean and land and reflect on our relationship with your environment and gratitude with the food we take from it.
Mānawa maiea te putanga o Matariki.
Mānawa maiea te ariki o te rangi.
Mānawa maiea te Mātahi o te tau.
Celebrate the rising of Matariki.
Celebrate the rising of the lord of the sky.
Celebrate the rising of the New Year.
On behalf of the TBI Health Team
Chris Gregg, CEO

One of the four pillars of Te Whare Tapa Whā is Taha whanau - where the health of our 'family' structures play a huge part in our hauora (wellbeing). If we feel safe, seen and supported by our whanau, (past, present and future) this gives us strength to believe in ourselves and where we fit in our wider world.
This is about who you feel you belong with, who you care about and share your life with. Whanau is about more than immediate family too, it includes relationships with our friends, colleagues and community.
It's an important piece to the overall picture of your wellbeing and one that we care about in our approach to your healing journey.
Our TBI Health Shop offers an incredible range of products tailored to support your rehabilitation. You'll find everything from braces, creams and waxes to exercise aids, tapes and items for footcare and hand therapy. Come take a look! 👀
