We stopped off in Te Kuiti for some nice curry and watched a concerning number of cats wandering about the main road. The fir...

Check out the new post on the Instructor Development Course (IDC) by our president, Kiera.
The IDC took a crew of soon-to-be Snow School instructors from practicing their teaching skills in Cornwall Park to putting their alpine skills to use on Mt Ruapehu.
Keep an eye out for more insights into the Beginner and Advanced Snow Schools!
Instructor Development Course (Alpine) The Instructor Development Course is an AURAC/AUTC-run course to develop our snow school instructorâs teaching abilities and alpine skills before teaching the students. AURAC took some time out of last weekendâs O-Trip climbing to help out the owners at Waipari with some crag cleanup. This included gathering up debris from the recent storms as well as building some new barrels for the toilet block.
It was great seeing our climbers giving back to the farm - many hands definitely made light work!
SPREAD THE SENDâźď¸ Help people get stoked on climbing by volunteering at our clubs expo stall! The expo is on next Monday 27th of Feb - Wednesday 1st of March at City Campus on Old Government House Lawn, and on Thursday 2nd of March in Grafton Campus in the Main Foyer. Last Sunday, AURAC ran a lead climbing instructional day at Stonefields giving a chance for climbers to learn how to lead climb and belay outdoors. After going over the theory and technique, the climbers then got to put it into practice on the wall. Overall it was a great learning experience, and an important first step for those looking to one day become independent climbers.
A huge thank you to Kiera Montgomery for organising and running the event, and to Aidan Sarginson and James Brown for assisting as instructors!
This weekend the Advanced Snow School class of 2021 met up for Silly Sunday (to seriously revise some skills) which included navigating the treacherous Stonefields and Mount Wellington to find clues, roping up for glacier travel blindfolded, and hauling some people up the wall. Only two eggs and a little bit of skin were sacrificed on the day.
A massive thank you to Sophie Jenkins and Alex Marsden for organising and running this event!
If you find yourself lost on a tramp or walk in the outdoors, and you have a weak signal or low battery, call 111 immediately.
Do not waste time and phone battery trying to change your voicemail message.
There is a post circulating on social media channels, particularly in outdoor, tramping and community groups on Facebook, that recommends people change their voicemail message rather than calling 111 when they are lost and have low battery on their phone.
This post contains incorrect advice that could be life threatening.
If you use up the last of your battery changing your voicemail, chances are nobody will know you need help.
If there is no cellular signal you will not even be able to change your voicemail message.
Before you go for a tramp or walk in the great outdoors let family and/or friends know where youâre going, and when to expect you back. Even better â make use of the 'Plan my Walk' app, which helps you plan and prepare your trip, including leaving trip intentions and advising contacts of your plans. More info here - planmywalk.nz
And take a distress beacon! These can be hired for as little as $10 and are an absolute lifesaver if you are in a life-threatening situation and need help. They can be hired or bought from outdoor stores and DOC visitor centres.
Get ready to refresh your carabiners or cop the latest Arc'teryx, the Bivouac Outdoor Queen Street AURAC discount night is coming up soon! Get ready for 25% everything (excluding the usual).
