What a joy it is teaching beginners! Our foundations of yoga workshop was yesterday and so nice to meet some new faces eager to learn the key movements and poses. I love that yoga brings together diverse groups of all ages. Its never too late to start!
Less than a week (and only one place left!) until Foundations of Yoga, a free beginners workshop where we break down the key poses such as this one - extended triangle pose or Utthita Trikonasana. One of my absolute favourites. Iβll also introduce simple breathing techniques(pranayama) and mindfulness mediation.

Continuing our journey around the hips: last week we worked the lateral compartment- outer hips /abductors
We worked towards poses such as side plank and standing figure four which stretched and strengthened the abductors and external rotators such as the glutes, TFL and the pirformis.
These, along with the deep core muscles, are responsible for pelvic stabilisation and good muscles to strengthen for balance!

Continuing our journey around the hips, this week we focused on the medial compartment - adductors (inner thighs)
We worked towards balancing poses which strengthen, tone and stretch the inner thighs.

This postures also increase core strength, build coordination and balance, and install a deep sense of calm and focus!

Journey around the hips: the anterior compartment (front hips).
This week we focused on postures that opened the front hips, targeting the hip flexors and quadriceps.
We slowly worked towards two challenging postures ; Ustrasana/camel pose and hanumanasana (front splits).

Our classes are for everyone and of all abilities. Our hatha/vinyasa (as seen in pic) will help you increase flexibility and build strength πͺ. We also offer Yin, are more quiet, still and meditative practice which also increases flexibility.

Today is winter solstice, βοΈSol (sun) Sistere (to stand still)
Daylight hours are at its shortest as the earths tilt pushes the southern pole to its farthest point. From tomorrow, daylight hourβs slowly increase π
While summer brings energy, heat, and creativity, winter is cool, dark and the energy is inward.
Winter is a Yin time of year.
It is a time to reflect on our health, slow down, conserve energy and take time to deeply nourish ourselves.
Yin pose: caterpillar π a calming, soothing and introspective posture which targets the hamstrings and back/spine, relieving stress and improving digestion.

Yoga helps us heal from the inside out.
In Yin yoga, we hold postures for a long time and target fascia ~ a fibrous connective tissue that weaves throughout our entire body like a web. A function of fascia is that it allows tissues to slide and glide across each other.
Fascia is also deeply intertwined with our nervous system as it communicates with the vagus nerve (part of the gut-brain axis) and plays a role in our immune system.
Stress and trauma can harden fascia and reduce its ability to expand and contract.
We nourish fascia through mindful movement, conscious breathing and sensory awareness. It keeps it springy and strong and helps us to recover quickly from stress and heal from traumatic events.

Weekly yoga classes ~ it's been wonderful to see the spaces fill and our little community grow over the last month. Restorative yoga is an antidote for stress. This deeply relaxing therapeutic practise up-regulates the parasympathetic nervous system which is responsible for rest and digestion.
