Cataracts. What causes them? 👁️🔹

The formation of cataracts is often age-related, which means that no one is immune to them. But did you know that some factors can cause the acceleration of the cataract forming process?

These can include (but not limited to):
🔹 smoking
🔹 diabetes
🔹 the use of oral steroids
🔹 previous eye injury or inflammation
🔹 high blood pressure/hypertension
🔹 prolonged, unprotected exposure to sunlight

Have you heard about myopia? This eye disorder affects millions of people worldwide, causing blurred distance vision. It is also known as short-sightedness or near-sightedness.

Myopia often starts in childhood, where it progressively worsens and causes frequent changes in vision. But a pair of glasses isn't the whole story. Higher levels of myopia increase the risk of eye diseases and vision problems in adulthood. If your child already wears glasses, you can do something to protect their vision and eye health. If they don't you can assess their risk of developing myopia.

If you look for images of vision with glaucoma, you’ll often see photos showing a black tunnel or big black patches dotted around. This isn’t very accurate, and glaucoma sight loss can be quite subtle, especially at the start. Some people with glaucoma notice just misty or blurry patches in their vision, particularly if they close one eye, and that’s how we tend to describe glaucoma sight loss.
