The day will follow the principles of the Cycling New Zealand College of Coaches curriculum and philosophy but is designed for those beginning their journey or structured teaching. Fun little Q&A prior to the World Championships.

TG BMX Club caught up with one of our local coaches this afternoon for a quick Q & A
Andrew Hickey Coaching

TG BMX
What are some challenges you have faced in coaching your riders leading into World Champs?

AHC
Itā€™s been challenging with the weather and hard to get consistency. Obviously we are training in winter here in NZ and itā€™s summer in the northern hemisphere. The wind has been the main culprit. Also, trying to get my riders adapting to multiple tracks leading into racing.

TG BMX
What race day tips do you have for your challenge riders?

1. Enjoy the experience
2. Breathe!!
3. Whatever is working for you in the motos keep doing that in your qualifying rounds. Itā€™s working for a reason šŸ˜€
4. Be aggressive

TG BMX
Have you raced at a World Championships yourself?

AHC
Yes. Auckland 2013, in the 17-24 age group.
I raced the North American and Canadian circuit 2014-2019

TG BMX
Who are you excited to see race in the Elite categories (on livestream)

AHC
Obviously all the kiwis, special shout out to Will Skipper . My internationals would be Felicia Stancil & Ryan Tougas (CAN)

TG BMX
Do you have any predictions you are willing to put money on for Elite/Challenge riders?

AHC
šŸ„‡Rico Bearman #44 for U23 Male
šŸ„‡Alise Willoughby for Elite Women
šŸ„‡Daniel Franks Vet Pro
All our Tauranga Club riders šŸ‘ŠšŸ¼šŸ‘ŠšŸ¼

TG BMX
Whatā€™s on the horizon for you?

AHC
Iā€™m running a nationwide Super Cross development program in conjunction with BMX New Zealand

In October I will be running clinics in Mainland South BMX from 2nd - 6th incorporating Dunedin BMX Club, Kaitangata Black Gold BMX,Alexandra BMX Club & Southland BMX Club.

Also Iā€™ll be trying to lock in more clinics in various regions.

TG BMX
What are you excited about for the future of NZ BMX?

AHC
Lots more development programs coming online. Pump tracks popping up around the country, playing bike is so important! Itā€™s also really exciting for Rotorua Bmx Club to be hosting a World Cup here next year and seeing our kiwi riders step up to the challenge and brilliant opportunity to bang bars with the best in the world !!
