🎉🍪It’s Dunk it for Plunket month! ☕✨

The big day has finally arrived – the start of Whānau Āwhina Plunket’s biggest fundraiser, Dunk it for Plunket.

People across New Zealand have been signing up to Dunk It For Plunket, with the first 1,000 receiving their free Dunk Kit - a box jam-packed with lots of goodies – to host a morning or afternoon tea fundraiser in September.

While the Dunk Kits have all been snapped up, it’s not too late to sign up! You can still register and host a get-together with colleagues, friends or whānau for this worthwhile cause. Or you can ‘dunk it your way’ by dunking anything – or anyone – you like. The website has lots of resources and inspiration, and we’d love to see your creativity.

But if you can’t host a fundraiser or attend one, you can still help Plunket by donating online – every dunk counts.
Head to www.dunkitforplunket.nz to learn more, and support Plunket’s incredible mahi so future generations can thrive 💜

Fever 01/09/2024

🔥🥵 Fever FAQs 🥵🔥

😷 What counts as a fever?
A normal temperature is around 37 degrees Celsius. A fever in a child is a temperature higher than 38 degrees Celsius, and a high fever is more than 38.5 degrees Celsius.

🌡 What do I do if I don’t have a thermometer?
You can slip two fingers down the back of their neck (under their clothes, between the shoulder blades) and see if they feel hotter than normal.

🦷 Does teething cause fever?
No it doesn't. If your child is teething and has a fever, they may also be sick.

🚩 When should I see a health professional?
Any pēpi under 3 months with a temperature should see a health professional. If your child has had an appointment, but is getting worse, go back for another assessment. Even if a child doesn't have a temperature, but they look unwell and you're worried, reach out to a health professional.

👕 👖 What should tamariki with a fever wear?
Sometimes we tend to overdress children when they are unwell out of worry for them, so un******ng your child to wearing a single layer (maybe a singlet and pants), can assist to bring temperature down.

For more child health advice, you can free call PlunketLine 24/7 (0800 933 922) to speak to a registered nurse. We're here to support you and give you peace of mind 💜

Keep an eye out for the label attached to your child’s clothing – the red or white label will tell you about the level of risk around heat and flame.

If you can, choose clothing with the white label and make sure they’re the right size to reduce risk. You’ll find these labels on nightwear - and some daywear - for children’s sizes 00-14.

If you’re ever unsure about safe children’s nightwear, the Commerce Commission has a handy fact sheet and more information on their website: https://comcom.govt.nz/consumers/product-safety-and-consumer-information-standards/childrens-nightwear

Dryers can be a lifesaver in the colder months, but we need to keep them lint-free to minimise the risk of fire. Static electricity, heat and dust can cause lint to ignite.

🧦 Remove lint from the dryer after every use

💨 Ensure there is proper ventilation and air space around the dryer

🚫 If your dryer isn’t working properly for any reason – don’t use it!

Button batteries, A.K.A. lithium ion batteries, are a big risk to tamariki. Here’s some tips to keep them safe around these batteries:

🔋 Keep objects with accessible button batteries well out of young children’s reach

🔐 Store spare batteries somewhere safe and take care when replacing batteries

If you think your child may have swallowed a button battery, go straight to A&E or an ED.

For more information about protecting tamariki from batteries, check out our website: https://www.plunket.org.nz/caring-for-your-child/burns-and-fire/

“When you’ve got a wee baby it’s not always easy to get out of the house. Having Plunket nurses you can call at any time for support really makes a difference.”

For Laura, having access to specialist breastfeeding support through PlunketLine was a godsend when she woke up feeling shivery with what she suspected was mastitis after being up all night feeding baby Fergus.

“I thought about going to my doctor, but with my husband away that was going to be a mission to wrap up baby Fergus and my toddler to get us all there.”

Instead, Laura called PlunketLine, our free, 24/7 parent helpline and advice service.

“The nurse was so lovely. She listened and explained everything I needed to do and also emailed me information that included handy diagrams showing what steps to take to get some relief," says Laura.

Breastfeeding is a learned behaviour for you and your pēpi, and it’s normal to need extra support. If you're struggling, worried, or finding breastfeeding difficult, talk to your Plunket nurse, Kaiāwhina or Community Karitāne. We also have a lactation consultant service, or you can call PlunketLine any time – day or night – on 0800 933 922 💜
