The Wintergardens in the Auckland Domain is a very popular, landmark attraction in the heart of Auckland city. It houses a treasure trove of rare and spectacular plants including the Amorphopallus titanum (co**se flower) and a large collection of chrysanthemums. The ever-changing display can be seen in two barrel-vaulted, Victorian-style glass houses which face out onto an extensive courtyard and sunken pool.

These tropical plants need plenty of heat to survive during the winter, even in mild Auckland. This used to burn through a lot of fossil fuel gas and had a high environmental impact, until Apricus Eco and Tubman Heating installed ÖkoFEN pellet boilers in early 2023.
This installation has reduced the environmental impact of the heating system by a fantastic 98%! Look out for more projects that are replacing fossil fuels around New Zealand.

Why should we replace gas hot water systems?

Gas is mainly made up of methane — a greenhouse gas more potent than carbon dioxide and a dangerous contributor to climate change.

Even before it is burned to create energy, gas production processes release vast quantities of carbon dioxide and methane at every stage of its supply chain. In the short-term, one tonne of methane warms the atmosphere 86 times as much as one tonne of carbon dioxide.

Like coal and oil, gas is a fossil fuel. It is formed from the ancient, decomposed remains of plants and animals.

Over millions of years, this decomposition creates gases that become trapped in rock formations deep underground. That gas must then be extracted by drilling, mining and fracking, which have devastating impacts on the environment and release pollutants that contribute to global warming.

So what are the alternatives for heating our hot water?

We offer a range of solutions for not only reducing the environmental impact but also the costs associated with heating hot water. These include:

> Solar hot water - heating water using energy from the sun.

> Air source heat pumps - using thermal energy from the air combined with electricity to heat hot water. Most electricity in New Zealand is generated from renewable sources like hydro.

> Pellet Boilers - these use renewable wood pellet fuel made from a waste product of the New Zealand forestry industry. Burning wood pellets means we are utilising carbon from the “current account” of carbon dioxide that is naturally circulating in the atmosphere, rather than using carbon from the “long term savings account” of carbon that was buried millions of years ago and formed fossil fuels. Netherton Primary School's Principal says installing a pellet boiler has been the best decision they ever made. Funding for the project was granted through the Ministry of Eductions's Sustainability Contestable Fund which was established to support schools to reduce their environmental impact and improve their operational efficiency.

The transition has helped the school to reach its environmental goals, making it the first to reach green gold status with the Enviroschools program.

Netherton School was previously emitting around 9,810kg CO2e per year from burning coal. By removing the old coal boiler and installing the new pellet boiler, caretaker hours have been reduced and there is a 99% reduction in carbon emissions. Pellets are delivered just once a year and are blown in and used with a fully automated system, freeing the school up from the manual operation involved with old coal boiler.

✔️ now available to replace fossil fuel heating and hot water infrastructure in existing commercial buildings through EECA's GIDI Commercial. https://www.eeca.govt.nz/co-funding/industry-decarbonisation/gidi-commercial-buildings/

The funding is now open for projects valued at over $300k. This can be used over multiple sites for one company if the projects are similar and technology solution the same, for example multiple sites for a retirement village company.

EECA will fund up to 50% of the projects incremental capital cost, i.e. the difference between a sustainable solution and continuing business as usual or replacement with fossil fuel system. So if a gas boiler for retirement home is $50k and the pellet solution $450k then the funding will cover up to 50% of $400k. The percentage will depend on the total value proposition of the install at cost per kgCO2 reduced AND other co-benefits to community, innovation, etc. It’s mainly $/kgCO2.

As well as commercial organisations, local councils are eligible and swimming pools are included. All other commercial buildings, excluding residential are included.

We can help you to complete the GIDI application process, which is strenuous and requires complex knowledge.

The funding is only available until it runs out or at latest up to 30th June 2024. It is only for existing buildings, replacing fossil fuel heating and DHW infrastructure.

We do not simply supply products. We assess your specific requirements and provide expert advice on the most suitable system, or combination of systems, to minimise your carbon emissions and running costs. Talk to us today https://ecohotwater.co.nz/commercial/

Forestry slash has been in hot debate recently and it's another reason why wood pellet fuel is a great choice of energy for New Zealanders. While most wood pellets at the moment are made from sawmill materials that would normally end up in landfill with a growing market more of this waste could also be utilised more efficiently.

The radiant heat felt from radiators is often compared to that of sunlight which feels more natural to our bodies. You really feel the heat from a radiator as you walk past, giving a very cosy feeling. Radiant heating in a home is a very different experience to convection heaters like heat pumps that need to move a lot of air to warm up the space.

An Easypell pellet boiler provides hot water to a system of radiators throughout your home and is one of the best central heating solutions for existing homes or multiple level new homes. Radiators are extremely responsive and radiant heat is less affected by drafts, lack of thermal mass and poorer insulation in older homes.

New Zealand needs to be more self-reliant, especially when it comes to energy. Critical to this will be clean energy, demand management, and energy efficiency.

Apricus Eco Hot Water & Heating are proud to have been platinum sponsors to the 2023 CEP conference which was run over the last couple of days in conjunction with the Bioenergy Association of New Zealand.

The conference brought together the best in international ideas, innovations, and speakers, challenging us to shift behaviors and decision-making to create a more sustainable world.

Tom Meaclem from DETA and I undertook a very productive solutions-focused workshop discussing retrofitting biomass systems in existing commercial buildings for central heating, domestic hot water, and process heat. We detailed the availability and energy density of existing and future biofuels in NZ, fuel handling and storage considerations, boiler output and space required, innovation in containerised plant rooms, when / if buffering is required, FM operational requirements, maintenance and system longevity.

Thanks to the Carbon and Energy Professionals New Zealand for putting together a great conference.

If you are keen to learn more about how your organisation can make the shift to biofuels. Get in touch.

Heating with hot water (hydronic heating) is common place throughout Europe and America. This is because water transfers heat at a rate 4 times the rate that air does and is a perfect medium for transferring energy around a home. The added benefit is the system is dual purpose sending hot water to radiators or underfloor heating, as well as providing all your domestic hot water for showers, baths, and washing.

The pellets used in pellet boilers are carbon neutral, as they are made from wood processing and logging waste products. This makes them a renewable and energy-efficient source of heat, utilising a “circular” model, where waste products are recycled back into a positive use in the economy.

Easypell pellet boilers produce less ash than wood burners, and release less smoke and particulate matter, minimising health hazards, especially in communal spaces. They are used for hot water and central heating in combination with your choice of radiators, underfloor heating and heated towel rails.
