Do you have plants that look like this with cupped leaves and twisted stems on stunted plants? Perhaps your dahlia flowers are coming out looking distorted with blown centers, curled petals or just not quite how you expected. Chances are your soil is contaminated with herbicide from recently added compost or new soil. Usually it is clopyralid and is often found in pea straw, many bagged compost products and in my case bulk mushroom compost. All my newly created beds, with hundreds of tubers and plants are affected. I am of course beyond disappointed. Gardening is so often challenging and a good teacher of non-attachment as so many things are beyond our control. I’m not sure what the answer is here aside from making your own compost as even store brought ‘organic’ compost is often contaminated. I thought I’d share this as I’ve seen a number of posts from people wondering what’s happened to their plants and while I can’t offer a solution I can perhaps shed some light on the cause.

It’s really feeling like summer is here in Wellington and Wairarapa. However, for our SPCA Wellington and Masterton Centres, it is really concerning to see the number of cases of dogs in hot cars in just two days. Just yesterday, our Inspectorate Team in Wellington and Wairarapa responded to five calls from concerned members of the public about dogs in hot cars. One dog had been left in the car for FOUR hours with the windows all the way up.
Today, our team have continued to receive calls and one of our Inspectors had to break a five-month-old puppy out of a car over concerns for their welfare. It was showing signs of severe heat distress – panting, licking lips, whining, hot to touch and visibly distressed - with surfaces in the car reaching 50 degrees.
When it’s 21 degrees outside, temperatures in a car parked in the shade with the windows down can exceed 31 degrees in less than ten minutes. In 30 minutes, it goes up to 40 degrees. Leaving your dog in a hot car can have devastating results, sometimes even fatal, and it’s disappointing to see this message still isn’t getting through to some pet owners.
Our Inspectors dropped everything to attend to these dogs. Thankfully, the puppy that was rescued today was okay, but with many of the reports we received yesterday, the owners had returned and left by the time we arrived. Not only had these pet owners risked the welfare of their dogs and allowed them to suffer unnecessarily, but their irresponsible actions took SPCA inspectors away from other animals who needed help. All of this could have been entirely prevented if they had simply left their dog at home.
New Zealand – our message is simple – if you love your dog, please don’t leave them in a car. If they can’t join you, please, PLEASE, leave them at home.

What does rebellion REALLY look like?
Repost from Hope Jj Medford
Make shift happen:
1. Learn to plant, not only an orchard, but also basic crops (corn, grain, cassava, etc. ) and trees (fruit, native, woody);
2. Create a bond with some land, whether it's yours or that of a relative, a project, a community garden, etc. Participate with the people who live there, go gradually looking for ways to spend more time in the countryside than in the city, learning to plant, purify water, treat organic waste and heal in nature;
3. Develop practical skills (cooking, carpentry, machine repair, food processing, sewing, etc. ). Teach these skills to children, friends and neighbors;
4. Seek a mutual support group, where people take care of each other, make products of basic need collectively, such as natural hygiene products, natural remedies such as syrups and herbal tinctures, food processing, such as preserved and fermented foods;
5. Simplify your life now, releasing more space and time. Discover everything you can do without money, walk, exercises, crafts and body arts, socialize with your loved ones, gardening;
6. Separate from the logic of consuming more and more. They prefer handmade products that last a long time, quality, made by small producers, social companies and solidarity economic companies. Make exchanges, give and receive gifts of affective value, rather than financial value;
7. Exchange, store, multiply and spread creole seeds (native, not genetically modified, produced by popular and family farming);
8. Recognize that life will be much better afterwards! We're just transitioning. "Our creativity is the limit of the system".
