For centuries this place has been shaped by a deep connection to whenua / land and a spirit of learning. With the name Wānaka being a South Island variant of the word “wānanga”/ place of learning.
The wairua / spirit created by the ancient landscapes shapes the experience of being in Wānaka and connects everyone who visits—whether for a few hours, or a lifetime.

Several weeks ago a group of thought leaders from the diverse fields of medicine, well-being, regenerative farming, indigenous wisdom and bushcraft came together for the inaugural SOIL TO SOUL Summit at the regenerative farm . The aim of the Summit was to gather a diverse group of experts: Lauren “the Body Whisperer” Roxburgh, Dr Zach Bush, and Kelly Gores of the Heal documentary/podcast, to discuss the relationship between the health of our soils, the health of our bodies and the health of our planet.

The Summit culminated in an inspiring 1.5 hour panel discussion that we are excited to share.

As much as we love all things snow, there are two sides to this town in winter. Which is great news if you’re more of the ‘two feet on firm ground’ type.

🔗 Head to www.lakewanaka.co.nz/wanaka-stories/6-non-snow-related-activities/ for our updated guide to non-snow activities this winter.

With everything from lakeside saunas and hot yoga, to river-trail rides and gallery outings, you might just convince some of the snow bunnies to join you.

Welcome back to the Queenstown/Wānaka Weekly Mountain Update.
All resorts are humming after the recent snowfalls, and the season isn't even half-way through yet!

Beautiful, fun conditions all over the region with snowfalls to report again this week and exciting months ahead as event season gets underway.

We're at Snow Farm today, New Zealand’s only dedicated Cross-Country skiing area, perched bang in the middle of Queenstown and Wānaka. There's great coverage here, it's a great spot to learn to cross-country ski, or visit one of their backcountry huts.

There's another light top up of snow predicted for Thursday night/Friday morning. Saturday's looking fine before another possible top up in the evening that should see even more on Sunday too, especially at high elevations.

Catch all the events and mountain specific updates in the Snow Report. It's our last one for winter 2024, so thanks for tuning in every week. But don't forget, the Queenstown NZ/Wānaka mountains are all scheduled to be open until September/October - so make the most of this snowy season!

This Friday marks Matariki - the star cluster that can be seen on those frosty mornings in the early winter months. It's one of the brightest, shiniest clusters in the sky. While it can be seen across the globe at different times of the year, in Te Reo it's called Matariki and it signifies the Māori New Year. 💫

The Matariki celebration is based on three major principles:
- The first is remembrance; honouring those we have lost since the last rising of Matariki.
- The second is a celebration of the present; gathering together to give thanks for what we have.
- Finally, we look to the future. Matariki is a time of renewal and celebration in Aotearoa / New Zealand that begins with the rising of the Matariki star cluster.

Kahu Youth brings our community together on Friday June 28, to connect and celebrate Matariki here in Wānaka. Think whakangahau / performances, a delicious hangi and free, fun activities that represent Te Kāhui o Matariki / star cluster. It's a great one to bring the kids to and is sure to warm a cold winter's night.

🔗 Head to the link in comments below to read more about Matariki and the Wānaka celebrations.

🏔️ The New Zealand Mountain Film and Book Festival is coming to Wānaka next month, and we're blocking out 21-25 June in our diaries for a long (long) weekend of incredible tales from the mountains. And if you love mountain adventures, films, books, guest speakers, art shows and adventure schools with epic tales of travel and exploration from every corner of the globe, you probably should too.

A big congratulations to Finlay Woods and Craig Murray for their short film Terra Incognita, recently awarded 'Best NZ Made Film' at New Zealand Mountain Film Festival. We were thrilled to be able to support this project, and are stoked to see all the hard work that went into this incredible film paying off.

The goal of Terra Incognita / Terrain Unknown was to explore new zones in the Southern Alps using alternate modes of transport, and the final result is pretty special. If you haven't seen it already, consider this another excuse to make it to the Mountain Film Festival next month.
