Duly Noted: Found Poems from the Notes App for
Saturday, 9 November 2024

Undercurrent
This one’s not for the timid. Be prepared to bare all and reveal the secrets of a most hectic and vulnerable place—your notes app. Maybe it’s a shopping list, a half-formed novel idea or your friend group’s agreed-upon rules for King’s Cup. Hand over just a scrap from your app to poets Nick Ascroft and Claudia Jardine and they will attempt to craft poems in real time. No promises that they’ll become The Spinoff’s Friday Poem, but they’ll be something!
Venue is not wheelchair accessible
ENTRY BY DONATION, $5 SUGGESTED
One of the five fairly awesome gigs we had during the recent jazz festival: Daniel Yeabsley and Oscar Laven blowing up what can only be called a storm and that’s Chris Yeabsley doing his exquisite thing on the electric organ. The hand on the right hitting the cymbal belongs to ..umm, I forgot, was it John Rae?, there were just too many brilliant musicians passing through our place. Let us know who it was.
Tonight!! Today at 6pm. Issue 4 is being launched. Readings from a talented bunch of poets. Come for wine, food and lots of poetry & cheer 🍋🍋
Lemon Juice Issue 4 will be launching at the bookshop on Wednesday 30 October, 6pm-7.30pm! 🍋 📖
Lemon Juice is a zine series featuring interviews, articles, and essays on poetry form and breaking the form, aiming to inspire new ways of writing that cross genres and break the rules.
The launch will include poetry readings from Cadence Chung—published poet, author of the nationally bestselling chapbook anomalia, classical musician, and one of the contributors for this next issue. You’ll also hear poetry readings from the six members of the Lemon Juice Writers Group—Billie Angus, Kayla Campbell, Raven Harvey-Lomas, Mereana Latimer, Erin Ramsay, and Aroha Witinitara. The Lemon Juice Writers Group is a free poetry workshop series that started this year, and this talented bunch have spent the past six months developing their poetry skills through workshops and writing prompts. This is a chance to hear the incredible poems they’ve been working on!
All four issues of Lemon Juice will be available to purchase, and all are welcome to come along and celebrate poetry in its many forms. There will be wine and food and lots of poetry-cheer, and the event will be MC’d by Lemon Juice creator and editor Emma Shi. Come!

Fabulous trio, Burgin, Kerr and Norman light up The Undercurrent stage on Saturday 26th October 🌟
Irishman Andrew Kerr (ex. Jacky Tar) and Alan Norman (The Warratahs, The Rag Poets) are joined by Paddy Burgin (The Wooden Box Band, The Zimmermans), who featured on Andrew and Alan’s critically acclaimed 2023 release ‘For the Record.’ A swampy melting pot of country, folk, americana and blues, they combine a mutual love of story-telling and rhythmic grooves with narratives about the human experience.
“…..one of the year’s best albums in Americana/folk….a thoughtful, passionate, and musically rich collection that holds up under repeated listens….” Anne Hollister

Instead of the usual open mic we are holding a jazz festival event. Only $10 for one hour of Chris Yeabsley and guests- 6pm ✨✨
This Thursday, at The Undercurrent presents… The Hard Times Bop- Estra 🎺
Dive into the sonic whirlpool at Undercurrent, where the organ will serenade you like a siren luring sailors into a sea of sound. The drum set will thump like the heartbeat of a caffeinated octopus, each beat a te****le reaching out to tickle your senses.
As the horn players take the stage, expect them to unleash a brass storm, their notes swirling like dandelion seeds caught in a whimsical breeze. Each solo will be a sonic soufflé—light, airy, and just the right amount of risqué, rising to heights that defy gravity and logic.
This isn’t just a jazz gig; it’s a musical masquerade where the rhythms waltz like awkward penguins and the melodies pirouette like confused ballerinas. Prepare to be swept away in a tide of improvisation, where every note is a splash of paint on the canvas of your imagination.
