The aurora in Wellington last month. I didn’t stick around for the 2am show (it was a school night after all!) which was much bigger than the earlier display. There were some interesting beams however!
One last Kaikōura shot 🥰
A wee detour - on our road trip up from Christchurch to Kaikōura, we made a few detours to check out potential points of interest. In reality, the best was yet to come as driving into Kaikōura is very dramatic!
Don’t bother too much with detours on the way would be my suggestion, particularly if you are short on time. Spend it all in Kaikōura!! This one, however, is worth the quick detour. Cathedral Cliffs at Gore Bay, the view point is right by the road.
Kaikoura NZ
Kaikōura coast - my fave wee fishing boats!
Can you tire of this view?!
(Hopefully not, because I’ve plenty more where these came from!).
Sleeping seals - which one is your favourite?
Kaikōura mountains!! 🥰
After 2 evenings of back-to-back aurora hunting with no luck (although the dials were promising!) I was literally about to pack it in, in favour of a warm bed/early night. I think I said ‘I’m calling it’ but for some reason, decided to take one lucky last shot. Glad I did, as my next words were ‘ooooh quick, shoot now, she’s going! to my fellow photographer friends. She danced for a while, although struggled against the moon. Here’s what I managed to get - the best shots were when the moon ducked behind the clouds-
A s***m whale! (And some duskies).
We only saw one whale on our whale watching trip, so just the one opportunity to capture the tail flukes before this guy (Tiaki I think his name was) began a deep dive below the surface.

Tried something new in Kaikōura with this sunset shot. This image is inspired by who was a speaker at the .national photography show last weekend. Thanks Elia for sharing your tips and tricks with us!
Did a wee spot the difference for a quick discussion exercise for my Photography Diploma. How many differences can you spot? (There’s some easier ones and some harder ones).
A wander around Petone foreshore…
The images I don’t hate, after having to create a photo story portfolio for my Level 6 Diploma in Photography at SIT. The rest I am sick of and/or grew to dislike through the process 🤣
Autumn colours in the Coromandel.
Mt Paku Summit, Tairua.
That time we found a ‘hidden’ beach - how lush is this place?! It was like discovering your own private island! (But one where the odd occasional visitor happened to stumble onto it 🤣).
We didn’t get particularly lucky with our sunrises and sunsets while in the Coromandel! Our camera’s barely made an appearance on the morning we visited Whangamata due to the thick cloud on the horizon. It’s not always about getting the shot though (or is it?! 😂) and we had a lovely walk along the beach while the rest of the world was waking up. I’m never usually up this early, so it makes a nice change to watch the world come to life!
First shot Canon EOS R6 (borrowed from ) second shot iPhone 14pro.
I've been having a bit of a play around with landscape panoramas (stitched) for my Level 6 Diploma in Photography - here's a couple of recent shots! Click to view full images.
Beautiful Onemana - what a stunning place! One can dream of lazy days lounging on the beach here during warmer weather, interspersed with refreshing dips in the ocean. Does it get any better?!
Owharoa falls, Coromandel.
Pauatahanui reflections and dog walks.
Waikawa beach, Horowhenua
A panorama of the aurora earlier this month.
Don’t look too close, it still needs some work 😉 but it’s getting there! This is my first ever nighttime/astro pano.
🌌
How good was the aurora on Saturday night?! We decided to head out to Himatangi for dark skies. Made it just past Longburn when I could see pink in the sky from the car. So we pulled down a road and sure enough, she was dancing!
Carried on toward the beach but there was a bit of low lying cloud and quite a few cars and lights there. While she was a bit quiet, we decided to head back into town to find a lookout of the city.
On the way back into Palmy, that’s when it went nuts!! We could see the beams shooting into the sky and see the pink - and that was with the car lights on high beams! So we pulled over and the sky was a deep pink to the naked eye - scroll for the last pics when she just blew up!! I’ve desaturated those too. Just nuts!
Have spent far too many hours playing around trying to get these images right. Not happy, but that will do for now 😂
And a couple in portrait.
Saturday night’s adventure and my first astro shoot for the season. Not quite happy with them, but shooting with new and different equipment always takes some adjustment! Or that’s my excuse anyways…
Thanks and for organising this meetup!
Had some fun with in-camera double exposures yesterday and experimenting with the R6. The double exposures were for an assignment for my Level 6 Diploma in Photography with SIT and so obviously I had to hire a multiple exposure enabled camera from for the occasion 😉
Fire spinning and light painting fun with the on a cool, calm Sunday evening!
